Posted by David Greenwald in Untagged

This week, families of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders will have the opportunity to participate in the elementary instrumental music program.  If you are such a family, then I strongly encourage your participation.  All it requires is a parent to attend one of the scheduled afternoon or evening meetings.

Meetings for parents of beginning string students (4th thru 6th grades) take place at Patwin Elementary at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week (Sept. 7-9), and at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at Patwin.  Beginning band student (5th & 6th grade) parents will meet at Emerson JH at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 7 & 8) next week.

Governor Tries to Break Open Empty Piggy Bank for San Quentin

Posted by David Greenwald in Untagged

By Natasha Minsker

Remember that episode of The Simpsons where Homer is so broke he breaks into his daughter’s piggy bank, only to find it full of IOUs from himself? Then again, maybe it was Home Improvement… or Family Matters. One thing’s for sure, I don’t remember that scene in The Terminator – not even the third installment. So why is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger so vividly replacing Homer Simpson in my memory of that scene?

On Wednesday, Gov. Schwarzenegger announced that he would be “borrowing” $64 million from the General Fund in order to move forward with one of his pet projects, the construction of a new death row facility at San Quentin. And $64 million is just the tip of the iceberg. Altogether, the new facility is expected to total upwards of $400 million.

Worthy of guarded optimism on Water

Posted by David Greenwald in Untagged

by Jessica Iñiguez

The State Water Resources Control Board this week adopted the report on flow criteria that was required by last November's SBX7 1 on Delta Governance and the Delta Plan. Based on the best available science, the report affirms what people in the Delta have known for decades: You can't have a healthy Delta when you are sending so much water somewhere else.

Specifically, the report says that "to preserve the attributes of a natural variable system to which native fish species are adapted," the Delta needs 75% of unimpaired outflow from January through June, 75% of unimpaired Sacramento River inflow from November through June, and 60% of unimpaired San Joaquin River inflow from February through June.

Who’s Bankrolling the Push for Prop 18?

Consumer group outlines who’s paying for pro-water bond campaign and the surprising winners—and losers—behind the massive $11 billion bond -

Developers, agribusiness and construction interests would benefit from the water bond on this fall’s ballot, while public services—such as education and public health programs—could suffer, according to a new analysis from consumer organization Food & Water Watch.

As California’s legislators return to Sacramento this week to decide the fate of Proposition 18, an $11 billion water bond that the governor hopes to postpone to the 2012 ballot, the group today released an independent analysis detailing the funders of the pro-bond campaign and the interests that stand to benefit from the most expensive water bond in the state’s history.

A Couple of Interesting Tidbits Sitting Around in the Courtroom

Posted by David Greenwald in Observations from the Courtroom

One of the more interesting things about sitting in a courtroom is listening to the conversations that take place when there is no judge or jury around.

I was sitting around Department 7 Wednesday morning waiting to see when the jury might return in the case of Maria Pastor charged with possession of 0.0118 grams of meth.  The conversation between the Deputy Sheriff and Deputy DA Sean King quickly turned to the case.  It was not about the absurdity of charging someone with possession for that small of an amount of meth, but rather the defendant's excuse that it was someone else's purse.

Davis Disability Pride Parade and Celebration on Saturday morning

Posted by David Greenwald in Untagged

A disability pride celebration marking the 20th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 31, in Davis' Central Park (between 3rd and 5th and B and C Streets) . It will begin with a sidewalk parade around the park, starting and ending at the Rotary Stage by the carousel, followed by speakers and performers at 9:30 a.m.  Central Park is also home to the Davis Farmer's Market at this time, so we hope you come and enjoy all the produce and goodies as well.

Organizers say they hope to “strengthen the pride, power and unity of people with disabilities, our families and allies” and “challenge the way many people think about and define ‘disability.’ ”
Davis High School and UC Davis graduate Sara Granda will serve as grand marshall for the parade. Paralyzed from the neck down after a car accident in 1997, Granda made headlines last year during her successful fight to take the bar exam. She has since been appointed special assistant to the chief counsel for the State Department of Health Care Services.

Court Rant by Defendant

Posted by David Greenwald in Observations from the Courtroom

by Yolo Judicial Watch Intern

There was an unusual occurrence in court Tuesday morning.  Madkins is an African-American male.  All the prisoners sitting were removed save for one, and the court officer told him to move to the farthest left, cuz "he wouldn't' want to be near this one".  Then they escorted Madkins in.  Right away, he started talking to the other prisoner in a very loud voice using a string of expletives and had to be quieted by the officer.  His public defender talked to him.  When his file was up, he said he had to defend himself b/c of the system and screamed that he was an African American fascist nazi and talking about the master race and expressed his hate for "niggers", which was really ironic.  There were a number of African Americans in the room.  He claimed that he was wrongfully imprisoned and the judge silenced him, ordering the court officers to remove him.  After, the judge made a joke on that's why he needed to be mentally evaluated but it was apparent that something was wrong with him mentally.
