Dear Readers:
Earlier this week the Davis Vanguard was hacked. It seems to have impacted ability to post comments. We believe most of the problems are now fixed.Ā If you have additional problems, start by clearing your cache.Ā That seems to resolve about 90% of your problems.
If for some reason it does not, we need you to email us and let us know the nature of your problem, the type of device you are on, the operating system, the browser and for those advanced users, a screen shot is very helpful.

Clearing cache worked, to a point.
The ‘main page’ “headline graphic doesn’t load, but says it’s loading.
Windows 7
Firefox
There is a great program out there for screen shots. It is called SnagIt by TechSmith (a great software company). http://www.techsmith.com/snagit.html
I higly recommend this program for all computer users. It is a bit expensive – $50 – but worth every penny. You can try it 30 days for free.
Everything is working fine for me on my PC (Windows XP), now. And also no more problems on the iPad.
What confuses me is why someone would hack this site? What do they get out of that? And if the guilty person can be caught. I would think they must leave some kind of a trail. And if they are in the U.S., I would hope law enforcement would track them down and make them watch synchronized swimming.
Jeff: of course, if you have a Mac, it’s just Command-Shift-4.

I’ve had this same problem for at least three weeks
MacOSX
Firefox
Don, Does the built in Mac function give you the ability to draw around any area of the screen to capture that section and then save it in 15 different graphic file formats? With a Windows PC, you can capture the entire screen with the [Print Screen] key and then paste it as a bitmat into a program that you can use to edit it and save it as a file. The Snagit program is much more flexible… it will also capture scrolling pages, and will do screen-scraping to capture real text from a page. These are all very useful features.
I cleared cache in Firefox, but it’s still exhibiting some weirdness.
For example, if enter davisvanguard.org directly into Firefox, I only see entries as of two days ago (e.g. the most recent entry is the one about the assault weapons bill).
If, however, I go into one of those stories and click on the “Davis Vanguard” link at the top, it takes me to a version that seems to be fully operable.
I just cleared my cache in IE and it appears to be working fine (although as someone mentioned upthread, the headline graphic doesn’t load, and the menu along the left-hand side looks funky).
Firefox 12.0
IE 9
Oh, and I’m in Windows 7.

You can hightlight any part of the screen. It saves it as a .png file, then you can open it in Graphic Converter or Photoshop and do whatever you want to it.
Two comments:
Funny how a common enemy (the hacker) has provided a very collegial discussion.
Add the fact that even when I refresh the main screen, the ‘comment counter’ doesn’t update as it used to.
Tried all day on and off to log on. Cleared caches over and over. Tried different browsers. The site kept taking me to a website with a grey background and information for cialis and viagra and some other drug. One time the login page wanted me to log in as cialis…
This site has been severely compromised, David. I don’t know what you want to do, but it is too frustrating to try to comment. I seem to be able to read your articles OK.
Oh, I’m on a Windows 7 PC.
Dear David:
The only way I get into the site is to log on each time I visit. Then I drop down to the articles list below and get to the site.
