Yolo County Sheriff Ed Prieto will speak with members of the public at the Vanguard Court Watch Council of Yolo County meeting on Sunday, July 28.
The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Pastoral Center, 503 California St. in Woodland. Community members are invited to come and learn more and ask questions or share concerns.
“We are providing an opportunity for the public to interact with different people in law enforcement in Yolo County,” said David Greenwald, executive director of Vanguard Court Watch. “People may have questions or concerns about a law enforcement matter, but don’t know where to go.
“It is through dialogue and communication that we can help people learn more about the judicial system and law enforcement in Yolo County and look at cases that are of concern to residents.
“We had the opportunity to speak with Lt. David Delaini from West Sacramento at last month’s meeting and the result was very positive,” he added. ”After hearing from our guest speakers, the council will take public comment, testimony from invited speakers, and then deliberate in closed session to determine our course of action.”
The Vanguard Court Watch Council comprises 12 members — eight residents of Davis, Woodland and West Sacramento plus advisers who include retired California Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso; Sacramento State professor James Hernandez, a gang expert; and attorney Anthony Palik.
The Vanguard Court Watch, founded in 2010, is a nonprofit organization that researches and reports on legal issues in Yolo County. It sends college interns to monitor court cases and “shine the light of scrutiny on a system often hidden from the public,” Greenwald said.
The Vanguard Court Watch Council will host public meetings at various locations in Yolo County. Goals include identifying court cases to track, police incidents to be investigated and cases involving alleged discrimination or prejudice.
