DJUSD signs on to federal program to provide free lunches for children 18 and under
During the school year, nearly 2,000 students each day receive free or reduced lunches in the Davis public schools through the national school lunch program (NSLP). For some children, this is the most nutritious weekday meal they receive. In some cases, it is their only meal all day.
To continue to provide nutritious meals to youth in the summer months, Davis Joint Unified School District (DJUSD), with help of a federal program, is providing meals to the children of Davis. From June 13-August 12, 2016, the Summer Lunch Program will be operating at five different sites around the City of Davis from Monday-Friday. Any child 18 years or younger may attend and receive a free lunch from 12:00pm-12:30 at the following host locations: Birch Lane Elementary School, Heather Glen Apartments, Moore Village Apartments, New Harmony Apartments and Windmere Apartments.
“The Davis School District is excited to be working with community partners to launch the Summer Lunch Program in Davis,” DJUSD Student Nutrition Director Dominic Machi said. “This is a key part of our mission to keep fresh and nutritious food in the daily diet of children. And, it’s a great fit, since we are already the ones providing lunches for students 10 months out of the year.”
The Davis Summer Lunch Program, made possible by the federal money through the Summer Seamless Food Program, will purchase up to 75 percent of the fresh produce and ingredients for the lunches from local food producers (defined as grown or raised within 300 miles). The Summer Lunch Program meals meet federal nutrition guidelines and include such tasty items as House-made Chicken Teriyaki, House-made Pasta Marinara and many other student favorites. Balanced meals of fruits, vegetables, grain products and meat or meat alternates are served. More information is attached on the Summer Lunch Program Flyer or the School Nutrition Services website at www.djusd.net/Student_Nutrition_Services.
that’s nice…any gmos? any soy or canola or other garbage oils?
any other foods that are listed on the US commodity’s lists? fake juice labeled as 100% real, that kinda thing?
high gluten and low or non-fat?
pray tell, what is going to be in those lunches….details please…
if it is mostly the organic local fruits and veggies and real grass fed beef and true grassfed butter? raw milk and so on….then that would be something to celebrate
pasta marinara? Nahh…get rid of the gluten…most children now are having issues due to the decades where Mr. Kellogg and others ran the USDA recommendations….and now we have Monsanto….
yes… definitely expose the blatant conspiracies! The ‘man’ is out to get us!
Except, gluten comes from wheat… ‘man’ has been eating wheat since the beginning of the hunter-gatherers… so why is it an issue now?
Marina, If you can’t read the Vanguard comment policies and follow them, perhaps you can read this- http://occr.ucdavis.edu/poc/
as one who truly has supported the principles of community in real, measured steps and actions over the decades, even before it was posted….and created, yes I agree…ryankelly…
sometimes one resorts to yelling as they are not heard and put down repeatedly…
the favorite people get away with all kinds of putdowns….and those who tend to shake up the status quo can be bashed without a blink of any moderator….

Wouldn’t you adore to “Ignore?”
yes, would love to ignore some on here also…where is the ignore button? oops forgot, this is not FB…
This is a wonderful program. Nothing builds cohesiveness like sharing food. The kids and teens have a very positive identification with their school district. Good for building better citizens, imho.
BTW, you might be surprised at how many hungry people welcome engineered crops.
