This event is a really special evening. The Concilio has been serving Yolo County since the 1970’s. As I heard their history explained last night, they gave 2 scholarships to Yolo County High School Students in their first year and now have given about 850 in total and the goal is more than 1,000 by 2018!
There was special recognition of “community members” who without exception, provide leadership active community service and encouragement to young people and those in need. Those recognized included; teachers, doctors, lawyers, pastors, business leaders, and volunteers. Everyone of them making a difference and rightfully recognized for all that they do.
But the highlight of the evening are the students who are recognized and who provide a brief speech while accepting their recognition and thanking Concilio for their award. Their stories and their aspirations are wonderful! Without exception every one of the young adults when accepting their award; recognized and thanked their parents, their family, their teachers and others who have leant them a hand or given them encouragement. Everyone of these students plans to go to college and shared how they are focused and working hard to get an education. Their goals included being; teachers, surgeons, social workers, FBI agents, nurse practitioners, and etc and without exception they want to give back to their community.
In addition to their studies these young people are athletes, musicians, club leaders, and very involved and active in Yolo County. These are kids from various walks of life. They are our neighbors who grew up either in our neighborhoods, or who have moved numerous times as migratory farmworkers, or are recent immigrants or are “undocumented” — and all are exceptional Yolo County residents.
This event is just great! Thank you to the Concilio and Rick Gonzalves for all that you do. I laughed and cried and left this authentic event at Vet’s Memorial filled with hope as well as a real appreciation for the promise of our future.
One concluding thought. If you really want to make “America Great” provide more money for education, focus on extending opportunities and social justice. Challenge and encourage people to do well and give back. We should all be working to leave our country and community better than we inherited it. This event clearly demonstrates that we don’t need to go back to be “great again” but instead recognize that we have great talent and promise that yearns to be nurtured, and focus forward on the future. These young people and this event gave those of us in attendance many reasons to be thankful and hopeful.
Thank you Concilio. Congratulations to those community leaders who were recognized. And to all the scholarship recipients –thank you for your insights and remarks and keep pursuing your dreams!
The Concilio, and the family who has supported this group and the scholarships, is to be very highly commended for doing so much for these young people.
I have been a fan for many, many years.
Glad to see so many students being recognized. …. so many scholarships are so hard to get and soo competitive and it takes a wonderful group like the Concilio to hand out scholarships to so many deserving young scholars.
What beautiful young men and women……I am so happy to read about you and your successes.
Crystal Sanchez, Western Regional Director for the National Union of the Homeless, has revealed that the homelessness crisis in Sacramento is much worse than official counts suggest, with 50,000+ people experiencing homelessness, and that the city's response is compounding the harm rather than solving it.
The People's Budget Coalition rallied in San Francisco to demand transparency, inclusion, and equity in the city's budget process, which they say has increasingly excluded the voices of those most impacted by economic instability.
President Donald Trump has issued an executive order titled "Restoring Equality of Opportunity and Meritocracy" that effectively nullifies disparate impact liability, a core method by which the federal government enforces the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and redefines civil rights in American law to focus solely on intentional discrimination.
Five years after the death of Daniel Prude, advocates are still pushing for reforms to end the over-reliance on police in mental health crises and to pass Daniel's Law, which would make teams of peers and EMTs the primary responders.
