We are excited to announce that, this week, we are launching the UC Davis Vanguard. It will be a fully student-run newspaper published online on the Vanguard, giving students a powerful platform to amplify their collective voices into the community on a range of issues.
The UC Davis Vanguard will operate with two co-editors and eight desk editors.
The co-editors in chief are Linh Nguyen and Julietta Bisharyan. The two of them have been court watch interns since January, as well as having experience on student newspapers.
We feature four news desks: City News, Campus News, Social Justice News and Student Opinion.
The news desks features four desks: City News Desk led by Jordan Varney and Lauren Smith. Campus News desk with Stacy Hernandez and Anastasia Guevara. Social Justice News Desk with Ritobrita Mishra and Gabriela Tsudik. And the Student Opinion Desk led by Susana Jurado and Gisselle Zaragoza.
The UC Davis Vanguard will publish daily and post throughout the day, and features about 30 staff writers.
Alright, another venue where I can voice my opinion and fight for the good cause.
Once it officially launches, please share link and clarify what rules are re: username, password, “rules of engagement”, etc.
All of the stories will feed to the main page of the Vanguard.
If this mean more articles, I hope you’ll change, or have an alternative, to the display format to allow for a concise list that allows for continuous scrolling of articles. As many are published already, they quickly fall off the bottom of the list in oblivion, unless you already know they are there and search for them.
That’s definitely an issue we need to address. For now, hitting “Top Stories” will load up the 20 most recent and you scroll through by page. But there are plans to fix this issue.
OK, that’s a good backstop. But many may not know that trick.
Trying to nurse things along until we can do a new site.
Does that mean there will be a print version, or would this more precisely be called a blog?
Would that range include politically right-leaning to poltically left-leaning, or did you have another range in mind?
I’m guessing you haven’t done much active recruiting among the Campus Republicans to fill those ten positions?
So, it’ll be larger and post more often than the Vanguard itself?
The Need for Housing in the City
The Need for more Housing on Campus
A-ffordable Housing as Social Justice
Davis residents are anti-Student
Will the censorship police be the same as on the Vanguard, or will students censor commenters with their own censorship team?
Will there be trigger warnings?
The Vanguard is really not a blog anymore. It’s more of a digital news site. The UCD Vanguard will have a full newspaper structure with editors and desks.
Commenting will be the same – same rules.
BTW, Alan, don’t be so presumptuous. While I would guess most of the writers are on the left, I don’t know. I don’t screen people by ideology. We have had a fair number of Trump-supporting Court Watch interns. We had one who went on to become a pretty conservative Deputy DA in one of the valley counties. You just never know.
Cool. [I mean, not that I think Trump is cool, not in the least.] But I do think it’s cool you had a wide range of interns politically. I will withdraw my presumption and keep an open mind. I really have no idea what this will be, am very supportive of student journalism (wrote a letter to support getting the Aggie back in print form), and often find student issues at UCD fascinating, so this could be really interesting.
Congratulation and best wishes but is the name cool with UCD and the Regents? Does it matter? Are there trademark issues?
Find out soon enough
I mean this seriously. A pizza parlor downtown tried to sell “Whole Earth Festival” shirts one year, and the U laid down the lawyer letter on them to cease & desist, because it was a trademark violation on a name the U said was theirs. If they’ll do that, I’d be very wary. They seem to be very sensitive about their intellectual property and what is associated with their name.
So many “outs” … UCD could mean “United Concerned Denizens”… pretty sure UCD is in the public domain as to initials…
I’ll never forget when we used to have full anonymous log ins, the University sent a cease and desist to someone posting under “Gunrock”
My roommate in college was the person inside the Gunrock suite for a season. After one of many Saturdays he was hungover elsewhere and didn’t come home before the game on Sunday. The suit was sitting in the living room, and I was quite tempted to put it on, show up at the game and make a complete “Gunrock” of myself.
Cool housing! See, the University provides nice housing!
Who will be the Editorial Board? Policies? Moderation (Alan M touched on this, as well)?
