Mark Merin, local defense attorney, will ask “Should Freedom Have a Curfew?” as he reviews the current West Sacramento ‘gang injunction’ at the annual meeting the Yolo Chapter of the Northern California ACLU on May 27, 6:30-9pm at the Davis United Methodist Church fellowship hall, 1620 Anderson Road in Davis. The meeting is free. All county ACLU members are invited, and the public is welcome.
After a potluck meal and election of new Yolo board members for 2010-11, special guest Abdi Soltani, Executive Director of NorCalACLU will provide a brief update of current ACLU activities, followed by Merin’s presentation.

The Yolo ACLU chapter’s award-winning activities cover many local, state and national issues, from the rights of the accused and homeless to freedom of speech and government detention. Recent meetings have focused on the Citizens United (“corporate speech”) Supreme Court decision, use of torture, rights of demonstrators and petitioners, and civil rights, including cases of alleged local police misconduct.
“Members of ACLU share a common passion-” said Natalie Wormeli, chapter president, “to protect the Constitutional rights of all Americans without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, religion, physical ability, sexual orientation, or political view.”
The annual meeting is traditionally an “open pot luck”, welcome to all participants. Guests are asked to please bring any dish, salad or dessert to share; drinks will be provided. “Come and meet old friends and new, and rekindle your passion!” said Wormeli.
