Our mission

The People’s Vanguard of Davis is committed to independent journalism that brings transparency and accountability to the institutions that shape our communities. We report on courts, the criminal legal system, government, public policy, and social justice, with a particular focus on issues and perspectives too often overlooked in mainstream coverage.

Through our Court Watch program, Vanguard Incarcerated Press, daily reporting, and investigative journalism, we expose institutional failures, scrutinize systems of power, and elevate the lived experiences of people directly affected by them.

Our journalism centers systemic inequities and communities historically underrepresented in the media, particularly those impacted by incarceration, economic inequality, and unequal treatment within the legal system.

By putting reporters in courtrooms and communities, investigating the decisions of powerful institutions, and bringing overlooked stories into public view, the Vanguard works to expose injustice, demand accountability, and give the public the information necessary to understand the systems operating around them.
