Six Council Candidates Forum in the next ten days – The other “big” news has been on the Measure J renewal front. Developer or Developer’s son Joseph Whitcombe has given us the only drama so far when he challenged the ten-year-old standing title of the growth initiative that gives the public the right to vote on peripheral development and land use designation changes. But outside of that drama, even that campaign has been relative quiet.
Last week our event was successful with a good amount of community members joining what turned out to be all five council candidates in one form or another. Joe Krovoza joined us via Skype from Washington DC. And Sydney Vergis made a late cameo appearance on her birthday.
On Wednesday April 28 at 6 pm at the Senior Center will be the CHA forum. This figures to be one of the more intriguing candidates forums as they will discuss Senior Housing Issues. The subtext here will be the extent to which they push for the Covell Village spot as a preferred location for a large Senior Housing Development.
On Thursday, the Yolo Sierra Club will host a candidates forum at 7 pm at the Community Chambers. That figures to focus on the environment and land use issues. That forum will be recorded and broadcast on Community Television.
On Monday May 3 will be the Transportation Voter Forum. According to announcement from Davis Bicycles, “Davis Bicycles! and the Davis Bike Collective will be sponsoring a transportation voter forum to be held on the evening of Monday, May 3rd, 7:30-9:00 pm at Bike Forth, 4th and L Streets. This forum is devoted entirely to transportation issues in Davis with a particular focus on bicycle-related issues, including questions from members of the audience. Candidates also give written answers to eight questions that were sent out ahead of the forum. These questions and candidates’ responses will be posted on the Davis Bicycles! website.”
The next day, Tuesday May 4, we will see the Davis Democratic Club forum. I think last time that was only for the Democratic Council Candidates, I am not sure if that will change this time. That is at 7 pm at the Davis Odd Fellows Hall.
Also at the Odd Fellows will be the DDBA’s forum on Thursday May 6 at 5:30 pm. That forum will focus on downtown and business issues.
Finally, the League of Women Voters will have their forum on Friday May 7 at 7 pm at the Davis Community Chambers. The Vanguard would especially like to thank Jean Canary, the President of the Davis League of Women Voters. Originally they had scheduled their forum for April 21 which was the date we had already selected for our meet the candidates night. But we were able to work together and they agreed to change to another night.
There may be more coming, from two years ago, there seemed to be a few others. I believe the UC Davis College Democrats are going to be co-sponsoring a forum in mid-May with the Vanguard. So that will be another time to get to know the candidates as well. If I missed any, please post them below and I will add them to the list. Anyone who sends a press release can get it posted in the Community Blogs Section.
In addition, we would like to invite our readership to submit questions that they have for the candidates and we can send them out periodically and post their responses.
Again, I would like to thank each of the candidates for making themselves available to meet the public last week. I had great feedback from the attendees, everyone learned a lot.
