Bike Ride and Path Cleanup Ends with Beer, Pizza Party

bikesJoin Sudwerk Brewing Co., the Davis Bike Collective and the city of Davis for Beauty, Bike and Brew, a community cleanup and fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 13, to beautify the Putah Creek pathway.

Cyclists of all ages will meet at 11 a.m. at the corner of Third and B streets, outside the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. Participants may want to arrive early to enjoy the Davis Farmers Market’s 40th Anniversary Party, which begins at 8 a.m. Reserved bike parking at the market is available for cleanup volunteers on the lower exterior patio, down the stairs at the Hall of Fame.

Staff members from the city of Davis and Sudwerk will lead the cyclists to Sudwerk Brewing Co., 2001 Second St., where riders will pick up tools and drop off extra belongings. Participants should bring gloves, a hat, sunscreen and water. Perishable goods from the market may be stored in a cold case. From there, organizers will guide bikers across the bike overpass to South Davis, where they will clean up the pathway along Putah Creek.

At 1 p.m., riders return to Sudwerk for lunch, games and refreshment. Woodstock’s Pizza will provide free slices to the volunteers. The brewery’s taproom opens an hour earlier than usual for the event. All ages are welcome. Sudwerk will donate 25 percent of its draft sales that day to the Davis Bike Collective, a nonprofit community education and bike recycling center, which makes bikes and bike maintenance fun, safe and accessible. Members of the Davis Bike Collective will be at Sudwerk to assist people with bike adjustments. The Davis Bike Collective, at 1221½ L St., will be open from noon to 6 p.m.

The event is one of several coordinated this summer, focusing on bicycling education, cleaning up the Davis pathways and raising money for local bike-centric groups. The collaboration led to the name of Sudwerk’s Bike Party Pils, a lighter, dry-hopped variation of Sudwerk’s top-selling Northern Pilsner. The beer debuted in six-packs last month.

Jennifer Donofrio, the city of Davis’ bike and pedestrian coordinator, helped organize Beauty, Bike and Brew. “I’m excited to partner with Sudwerk and the Bike Collective,” she said. “I think that together, we are increasing ridership, making our pathways cleaner, and making biking fun in the community.”

Building on more than 25 years of family legacy and brewing tradition, Sudwerk Brewing Co. specializes in artisanal brews, specifically West Coast craft lagers. Its taproom, The Dock, 2001 Second St., Davis, is open from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and 2 to 8 p.m. on weekends. It offers a rotating menu of experimental and innovative beers, “honest pints” and growler fills, fresh White Labs brewers’ yeast, and good conversation. Learn more at http://sudwerkbrew.com
