(From Press Release)– The ACLU of California announced today simultaneous radio advertising buys in the Los Angeles and Sacramento media markets urging listeners to call their state representatives in support of AB 931, a bill that will update the state’s deadly use of force standard for police.
Current law allows police to use deadly force even when there are alternatives available to police. AB 931 (Weber) would clarify that police should use deadly force only when necessary and when there are no reasonable alternatives.
The thirty and sixty second spots will begin running Tuesday on both news radio and Hip-Hop radio, including the top-rated station for Hip-Hop in the Los Angeles market, Power 106 FM.
“AB 931 would mark a simple and commonsense change that would save lives,” said Natasha Minsker, Director of the ACLU of California Center for Advocacy & Policy. “Last year alone, police killed 172 people – more than any other state – with people of color accounting for a disproportionate number of the people killed. By passing AB 931, California would make tremendous strides to prevent unnecessary killings by police.”
The ads will run this week as the state legislature nears its Friday deadline to pass legislation for the Governor’s consideration.
