Awareness of student food insecurity at UC Davis has increased since Chancellor Gary May initiated a Student Food Security Task Force and resulting report last Fall, but it wasn’t new news to Annie Adachi. A student herself, Annie manages the ASUCD Pantry, now housed in the Memorial Union on campus. Her understanding of the impact of student hunger upon academic success emboldened her to lead the effort to move the Pantry to its new, more visible location, as well as to deepen the Pantry’s partnership with Yolo Food Bank. This year, the Pantry has substantially increased the amount and variety of fresh foods accessed from Yolo Food Bank, and receives weekly deliveries.
“The ASUCD Pantry works with Yolo Food Bank to combat food insecurity at UCD,” Annie explains. “Each week, our student staff coordinates with Yolo Food Bank to keep our shelves stocked for the hundreds of students who depend upon the Pantry daily. We’re grateful that Yolo Food Bank is able to supply so many healthy food options, such as fresh produce, whole grains, nut butters, and more. This partnership enables students in need to make ends meet and succeed in their educational journeys at UCD.”
Yolo Food Bank is proud of Annie’s commitment to nutrition at UC Davis. Our partnership with the ASUCD Pantry is one of several ways that we Nourish UC Davis. You’re invited to be our partner to Nourish UC Davis and #NourishYolo, as our capacity expands in our new food distribution warehouse. Please feed hungry students at UC Davis and our local community colleges now by making a pre-scheduled donation to our Big Day of Giving campaign at bit.ly/BDOGYFB2019. Your gift is an investment in their futures!
