Yolo County families in crisis due to domestic abuse, child abuse or sexual assault are especially fragile, but access to good nutrition empowers them to regain a sense of wholeness. Empower Yolo‘s partnership with Yolo Food Bank ensures that the healthy foods needed to heal minds and bodies consistently are within reach, and Program Director Josie Enriquez sees first-hand the difference that it makes. The collaboration between the organizations services families both at the shelter and at regularly-scheduled food distributions at the Center for Families in Yolo, Knights Landing, and Davis, as well as at Marguerite Montgomery Elementary School in Davis.
“We serve people from diverse backgrounds, and they tell our staff how the food distributions help them to include more vegetables and fruits in their diets,” Josie explains. “The families taking part in enrichment activities at our shelter also benefit from the food we get from Yolo Food Bank, and we appreciate that it is available to us at never more than 19 cents per pound, no matter the item.”
