Latinas/os Creating Community in Davis, formally known as the Latino Advisory Committee, is a new grassroots community organization of Latino families in Davis focus on prioritizing the interests of our multi-lingual and multicultural Latino community.
It is organizing the “Community Colleges Myths and Realities Workshop” in Spanish on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm at the New Harmony Mutual Housing Community Room on 3030 Cowell Blvd. 95618. It is a four-hour workshop with speakers and informational materials from various community colleges, including the Sac City College Davis Center, American River College Puente Project, Woodland Community College Ethnic Studies Program, and more. It is sponsored by the Davis Phoenix Coalition, Supervisor Jim Provenza, Cecilia Greenwald, Sac City College Davis Center, ARC Puente Project, and the WCC Ethnic Studies Program. Leading this event are community members Maria Cabrera and Rick Ramirez.
Organizing members felt motivated to disseminate the message of the benefits of going to a Community College. They understand the challenges that many of our students and their families face when deciding what to do after high school.
Many students believe there are only two options: going to a 4-year university or getting a job, and unfortunately, many of our Latina/o/x students know they’re not ready to attend a university.
Organizers aim to address the misinformation and the “stigma” associated with going to a community college, especially in a college town like Davis. This is how the idea for the workshop came to light. Everyone is invited to attend for free, breakfast and lunch will be provided. Translators will be available for English Speakers.
Colegio Comunitario Mitos y Realidad
Latinas / os Creando Comunidad en Davis, antes conocido como el Comité Asesor Latino, es una nueva organización comunitaria de familias latinas en Davis que se enfoca en priorizar los intereses de nuestra comunidad latina multilingüe y multicultural.
Está organizando el “Taller de Mitos y Realidades de los Colegios Comunitarios” en español el sábado, 1 de junio 2019 de 9:30 am a 3:00 pm, en la sala comunitaria de Mutual Housing, 3030 Cowell Blvd. 95618.
Es un taller de cuatro horas, con oradores y material informativo de varios colegios comunitarios, incluyendo Sac City College Davis Center, el Proyecto Puente de American River College, el Programa de Estudios Étnicos de Woodland Community College y más. Está patrocinado por la Coalición de Davis Phoenix, la Oficina del Supervisor Jim Provenza, Cecilia Greenwald, el Centro Davis de Sac City College, el Proyecto ARC Puente, y el Programa de Estudios Étnicos del WCC.
Organizando este evento están los miembros de la comunidad Maria Cabrera y Rick Ramírez. Los miembros organizadores se sintieron motivados para difundir el mensaje de los beneficios de ir a un Colegio Comunitario. Son conscientes de los desafíos que enfrentan muchos de nuestros estudiantes y sus familias cuando deciden qué hacer después de la secundaria.
Muchos estudiantes creen que solo hay dos opciones: ir a una universidad de 4 años o conseguir un trabajo, y desafortunadamente, muchos de nuestros estudiantes latinos saben que no están listos para asistir a una universidad.
Los organizadores pretenden abordar la desinformación y el “estigma” asociado con ir a un colegio comunitario, especialmente en una ciudad universitaria como Davis. Así es como salió a la luz la idea del taller. Todos están invitados a asistir de forma gratuita, y habrá desyuno y almuerzo. Habrá traductores disponibles para hablantes de inglés.
