In 2017 Larry Krasner shocked the world by becoming district attorney in Philadelphia. Since then progressive-minded prosecutors have run from coast to coast, pushing with them a reform agenda that includes decarceration, ending cash bail, true conviction review policies, ending the death penalty, and much more.
In 2018, Dean Johansson in Yolo County nearly defeated three-term incumbent Jeff Reisig. Noah Phillips (Sacramento) and Genevieve Jones-Wright (San Diego) pushed for progressive reform in their unsuccessful bids. In 2019, the movement has continued with Tiffany Caban winning in Queens and Chesa Boudin battling in San Francisco.
On October 26, the Vanguard will host its annual fundraiser, with four people at the forefront of the progressive prosecutor reform movement.
Speakers include:
Jeffrey Deskovic – knows something about the consequences of corrupt prosecutions. At the age of 16, he was wrongly imprisoned and served 17 years for a rape and murder he did not commit, before DNA evidence exonerated him. He’s now taking his bar exam in New York, wanting to become a progressive prosecutor, and was instrumental in pushing for New York’s newly-approved Prosecutorial Misconduct Commission.
Satana Deberry – Durham, NC, DA, who is now holding office in the same seat held by disbarred former prosecutor Mike Nifong.
Genevieve Jones-Wright – a public defender in San Diego, ran in 2018.
Noah Phillips – former deputy DA in Sacramento, ran in 2018.
Join us on October 26. Tickets are $50. Sponsorships range from $100 to $5000. Deadline to sponsor: August 31. Proceeds go to the Vanguard Court Watch operating in Yolo County, Sacramento County and San Francisco County – monitoring prosecutorial misconduct and over-prosecution in real time.
