Washington Commons is hosting a reception on November 11th to show off the design of their future home to be located the ½ acre property it owns in the Washington Neighborhood of West Sacramento. The community was founded by local residents who seek a collaborative neighborhood based on the shared values of supportive personal connections and sustainable living. These eventual homebuyers pooled their funds to purchase the property, pay for pre-development costs and brought in a Portland cohousing developer to partner with them. The four-story, 35-condominium unit building to be constructed at 330 G Street, one block from the Sacramento River, is being submitted to the City of West Sacramento for entitlements this month. The community will include over 6000 square feet of common amenities, with a Great Room that opens onto a generous outdoor terrace, as well as a lounge, guest rooms, workshop, and exercise space. The one to two-bedroom condominiums will include private balconies and lots of natural light for great urban living in this walkable neighborhood.
Joren Bass, of Urban Development & Partners (UD+P) out of Portland Oregon, heads the professional team that includes Mahlum & MFA Architects, also of Portland. Katie McCamant, nationally renowned cohousing consultant is guiding the community building process. The design resulted from four collaborative design workshops with the of Washington Commons buyers group.
Bass, who managed the development of PDX Commons in Portland Oregon, a similar urban cohousing community completed in 2017, noted “We are pleased to be part of this new urban approach to housing. We think there is a great opportunity for this in Sacramento and in other urban centers of the West.”
“We are excited to be a part of this vital, close-in West Sacramento neighborhood. Our urban location at 4th & G Streets is ideal for walking and bicycling,” commented Anne Geraghty, Washington Commons member and former executive director of WALKSacramento. The building is designed to encourage positive relationships between neighbors and community activities – while maintaining personal privacy. Generous bicycle storage will encourage members to take advantage of the growing network of bicycle lanes in West Sacramento. Geraghty added, “We are seeking additional buyers who want to be part of this exciting opportunity to join the community over the next two years with the goal to begin construction in 2021 and move in 2022.”
Stu and Janet Wilson, residents of Sacramento for 45 years, have already sold the big home they had in anticipation of moving to Washington Commons in a few years. “I can’t wait to live in a community where I really know my neighbors, and we can work together to make a better environment for all of us.
