DNA Evidence Overturns Two-Decade Wrongful Conviction of Georgia Man

Marquez Powell, 41, was exonerated Thursday after nearly 21 years of incarceration for a 2005 murder, following a Fulton County judge’s approval of a Joint Extraordinary Motion for New Trial. The motion, filed by the Georgia Innocence Project and the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office Conviction Integrity Unit, cited newly developed DNA evidence that supported Powell’s claims of non-participation and prompted prosecutors to dismiss all charges.
