Downtown Road Closure for Second Street Corridor Improvement Project
Road reconstruction work that was postponed due to recent storms has resumed and will be reaching its peak of activity next week.
On Monday, April 4th, the contractor will cold plane (grind) the asphalt concrete pavement of Second Street from B to east of G Street. This activity will take one to two work days and require the closure of Second Street between B and H Streets to all motor vehicle and bicycle traffic and parking in order to avoid conflict with heavy equipment, many large trucks, and cleanup crews. This closure includes cross traffic at all intersections between B and H Streets. Pedestrian access to sidewalks will be maintained subject to some short delays. Signage will be in place to detour traffic around the work zone. The contractor will also be grinding a portion of E Street from Second to Third Street where sidewalk work was completed last fall. This will affect traffic and parking for a limited period of time at that location.
Second Street will then be open to all traffic while the contractor takes one work day to perform crack sealing. Flaggers will be directing traffic through the work zone. No parking will be permitted on either side of the street.
Following this operation, the prepared street surface will receive an asphalt concrete overlay. This work is scheduled for Thursday and Friday and will again require the closure of Second Street to all vehicle and bicycle traffic and parking. This also includes cross traffic at the intersections. On one of these days, the contractor will also pave the portion of E Street that was ground a few days prior. This will interrupt traffic and parking for a short time at that location.
Following the overlay, the schedule will require three days to reset utility frames and covers to grade and three days for installation of pavement striping and signage. Expect minor delay for this work and parking restrictions.
All Second Street businesses will be open for the duration of this work and pedestrian access to them will be maintained. All streets will be reopened at the end of each work day. Please remember to follow the directions of all signs and flaggers, and proceed with caution through work zones.
