In the 3rd Senate District and in California, there has been a disconcerting trend toward fewer and fewer candidates and even some canceled elections when the number of candidates has not exceeded the number of vacancies. I am pleased to say that this is not true for the Davis Joint Unified School District. We have a slew of good candidates, making it hard to choose.
Alan Fernandes was an excellent appointment; he deserves to be affirmed by the voters in November.
I would like to recommend Madhavi Sunder, Barbara Archer and Bob Poppenga. All have been active in the schools. They each bring their own experiences and interests to the board. I believe they will be able to listen and complement each other’s strengths.
Of all the elected offices, I believe that a seat on the school board is one of the toughest. We care deeply about our children’s and grandchildren’s education and demand much from our schools. But our state has not given our schools the resources they need. During the next four years, difficult choices must be made as the tax increases in Proposition 30 are temporary and will draw to a close. Alan, Madhavi, Barbara and Bob are prepared to govern and to work with each other. Join me in supporting them.
