State Senate candidate Mariko Yamada joins United Farm Workers at State Capitol in support of Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez’s AB 1066 farm worker overtime pay
Mariko Yamada, candidate for State Senate District 3, has joined the United Farm Workers and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez today on the north steps of the State Capitol in support of the Assembly Bill 1066 to grant farm workers overtime compensation and wage protection.
From 8 a.m. this morning until 8 a.m. tomorrow, Yamada and others will participate in a 24-hour fast in solidarity with farm workers.
Mariko Yamada said, “I’m proud to stand in solidarity with these hardworking Californians who do backbreaking work every day – because they’re entitled to the same rights as millions of Californians.”
“At the very moment my opponent, former Republican Bill Dodd, begins his high-dollar fundraiser, I’ll be standing in support of fair wages for farm workers on the steps of our State Capitol at 5 p.m. And while my opponent leaves Sacramento to court wealthy donors, I will be standing after fasting since 8 a.m. with some of California’s hardest working people. We know where his priorities are. We need leaders who will fight for everyday Californians – not politicians who put corporate interests ahead of working families.”
On June 2, 2016, Assemblymember and former Republican Bill Dodd voted against AB 2757, a bill that would have granted farm workers overtime compensation and wage protection. The bill died on the Assembly Floor.
Yamada continued, “My record on justice for farm workers isn’t new. I voted for farm worker overtime six years ago in the fight for SB 1121 and again for AB 1313. Because they know I will always take a stand for justice, I’m proud to have the support of civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, SEIU California, AFSCME Council 57, California’s nurses and teachers. They know I will never stop fighting for those who need our help the most.”
good job, Mariko….and thank you for doing this..
Some of us cannot, for health conditions, join fasts any more.
The problems go way deeper now than the “overtime” issue.
For example, pesticides need to be banned, which cause health issues for the farmers and their families.
Conventional farming kills workers every single day.. That is even more urgent….
In Capay, the laborers are now getting $20/hr…and there is a true shortage…organic farms are way safer and healthier…
Please continue to get the word out…on this and so many other issues.
GO MARIKO for Senate…
