Nourish West Sacramento: Yolo Food Bank’s Partnership with Mercy Coalition

by Michael Bisch

Inspired by a deep respect for all people regardless of their circumstances, Lynn Anne Phelps Holzner serves as the volunteer lunch coordinator for the homeless and under-served who visit WS Mercy Coalition of West Sacramento. More than 1,000 brown bag meals a month are provided, in addition to shelter options, by the nearly two dozen faith-based groups and city and county programs that form the coalition. Mercy Coalition’s unique partnership with Yolo Food Bank formed 18 months ago, and has extended their service to the homeless to include toiletry items, in addition to bagged lunches.

“We couldn’t do what we do without Yolo Food Bank,” Lynn says, a bit teary-eyed.  “Twice a month, I visit Yolo Food Bank for food for the lunches, snacks and also for non-food items, for a once-a-month distribution of hygiene bags.  The people we serve have these basic necessities because of Yolo Food Bank.”

Lynn and Mercy Coalition nourish the bodies and the spirits of West Sacramento’s vulnerable, unsheltered residents, thanks to their partnership with Yolo Food Bank.
