On Wednesday, the Vanguard released the third episode of its podcast speaking with Civil Rights Attorney John Burris.
John L. Burris has practiced civil rights for almost 40 years, with his primary focus on police brutality and reform. Among the clients he has represented: Rodney King, Oscar Grant, Joseph Mann and Nandi Cain out of Sacramento, Mario Woods out of SF, Tupac Shukur, and many others.
Most recently, Burris litigated important Sacramento cases that preceded the recent passing of the SB 1421, a state bill in California that now requires police agencies to release body camera and video footage of officer’s use of force to the public after shootings and when a person is seriously injured. The bill also requires the release of personnel records in regard to an officer’s history of dishonesty, excessive force or sexual assault. All of these are issues that Mr. Burris has fought to address over decades of litigation.
