“Are you concerned about the treatment of refugees? Would you like to learn how you can help? Jewish Action NorCal and NorCal Resist are co-hosting a Migra Observer & Accompaniment Training for our Davis Community on Sunday, October 6th, from 6:30-8 PM. It will be held at Congregation Bet Haverim at 1715 Anderson Rd in Davis, and is free to the public.
This training will include information from Immigration Lawyers and Advocates, to help us all learn about and understand the complexity of the laws surrounding refugees, immigration, and ICE, in order to help us create a safer community for all of us.
Our migra observers are trained to watch and document ICE activity in our region. Through a text dispatch network, they are activated when potential ICE activity is spotted, and ensure that if ICE is present, our community members are aware of their rights and abuses are documented.
Our accompaniers are our first line of defense; they attend important events, like ICE check-ins and immigration court hearings, with members of our undocumented and asylum seeking community. Because many asylum seekers are very new to our area, they often do not have a drivers license, are unfamiliar with how to enroll kids in school, and do not have work authorization, meaning they have very limited or no income. Our accompaniers make sure local asylum seeking families have an ally and friend in the community who can help them navigate unfamiliar bureaucracies.
Speaking Spanish is not a requirement for either program! Folks who are available during the day— retired people, folks who own their own businesses, people with flexible work hours, stay at home parents, college students with time in their schedule— are invaluable! Please consider attending this training!
Email JewishActionNorCal@gmail.com with questions or if you plan to attend, and find us all (Jewish Action NorCal and NorCal Resist) on Facebook and Twitter.”
