Zebra Code, a local startup company, is offering a full stack web development course that teaches how to build, code, and deploy data driven web applications on the cloud. The course targets businesses, non-profits, entrepreneurs, students, or anyone interested in technology.
“With new cloud technologies, building web apps has never been easier.” says Terry Toy, Zebra Code’s founder, who has over 15 years experience in the industry and previously taught web development courses at UC Davis Extension. The course focuses on building data-driven web applications that solve business problems, such as streamlining processes or improving communications.
Zebra Code is partnering with Davis Downtown. As part of a class project, students will build a “Daily Special” app for the local business association. Downtown merchants post specials for the day which the public can view from their mobile phones. Local organizations can submit app ideas on the Zebra Code website. Then, students, if interested, will build prototype apps. The idea is to give class participants genuine business problems to solve. At the end of the course, participants have the opportunity to present their projects on Demo Night.
Promoting lifelong learning, Zebra Code’s mission is to help people and businesses take that first step and learn how to code. That’s why Zebra Code’s curriculum is based on WEB2PY, an open source web framework, which was specifically designed as a teaching platform. “Learning other frameworks can take 10 times longer and often cost tens of thousands of dollars.” says Toy. While easy to learn, WEB2PY makes no compromises in regards to performance or scalability.
Zebra Code uses an innovative project based curriculum that emphasizes pair programming, small groups, online curriculum, short lessons, and extensive hands-on lab time. No prior programming experience is required.
“Coding is the new digital literacy”, says Toy. Muhammed Chaudhry, CEO of Silicon Valley Education Foundation, writes “there are more than 75,000 open jobs in computing in California and only 4324 computer science graduates to fill them”. We need these skills in Davis as a foundation for innovation, economic growth, and life-time learning.
The course starts on April 2, 2015 and meets each Thursday evening (6-10pm) for 9 weeks at Davis Roots, 604 2nd Street, Davis, CA. Zebra Code is mentored by business accelerator, Davis Roots. The special introductory price for the entire 9 week (36 hour) course is $350. Enroll early because space is limited.
