Woodland – Over the summer of 2018, 49-year-old Sacramento resident Alfred Narayan allegedly became inappropriately involved with a now-15-year-old girl. He now faces six felony counts.
Police Officer Timothy Twardosz of Sacramento was the first and only witness to testify during Friday afternoon’s preliminary hearing. He has served as an officer for 22 years and was made aware of this case on August 15, 2018.
He explained that the alleged victim’s mother found a disturbing thread of text messages on her daughter’s phone earlier that month. These messages, sent between Mr. Narayan and the alleged victim, were “sexual in nature.” This conversation also contained photographs and videos, which the defendant allegedly told the girl to send
Defense Attorney Keith J. Staten clarified that his client had not used threatening language or forced the girl to take, send, or view the pictures and videos included in the text thread. He also 
confirmed that the inappropriate conversations had ended by August 1, 2018, and did not resume.
Officer Twardosz then noted three incidents of inappropriate touching by the defendant toward the alleged victim, which occurred throughout the summer of 2018.
During the redirect examination, Attorney Novelli and Officer Twardosz discussed a portion of the text thread where the alleged victim talked about telling people about their conversation. Mr. Narayan had replied to the girl that if their texts were shared they could get in trouble. The texts remained private until the late summer of 2018, when the alleged victim’s mother searched through her daughter’s phone.
Attorney Staten attempted to appeal to Judge Paul K. Richardson by explaining that his client had no previous criminal record, and requested that the felony charges he is facing be reduced to misdemeanors under a Penal Code section 17(b) motion. Judge Richardson ruled that “the charges are frankly too serious and troubling” to permit any leniency, and the court will hold Mr. Narayan to answer on all six felony counts.
Mr. Narayan is charged with three counts of lewd acts on a child under 14, one count of harmful matter sent to seduce a minor, one count of contacting a minor with intent to commit a felony, and one count of possession of child pornography. He faces $100,000 bail.
An arraignment on the information will be held on Friday, November 8, at 10 a.m. in Department 13.
