Yesterday Nancy Pelosi was sworn in as Speaker of the House. I did not want to let this momentous occasion pass without a few brief words.
Pelosi becomes the first Democratic speaker of the House since Thomas Foley in 1994. More importantly, she is the first woman speaker of House. We have had 220 years of Congress and this the first time the “marble” ceiling has been shattered.
Pelosi also becomes the first House Speaker from the State of California. She is a liberal from the Bay Area and a progressive.
Most importantly she becomes the most powerful woman ever in U.S. government.
She comes with a very difficult task at hand. The country needs strong leadership on Iraq and ethics. Those will be questions that we address later. For now, let us enjoy one of our own acceding to position of power and influence.

The swearing in of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the US House of Representives holds much promise for our country. It was simply wonderful to see this strong patriotic woman surrounded by dozens of children take the oath of office.
Pelosi is an inspiration to all fellow progressives and citizens throughout our country as she represents authentic change for the better.
As she stated in her acceptance speech her election as speaker symbolizes that women across this country are moving from the “kitchen to the congress” and truly realizing the great promise of our nation that “all men and women are created equally.”
Her election is the beginning of the effort to restore honesty to the Congress and honest government to our nation.
Her determination to return strong ethical standards to the Congress as well as restoring accountability to our government by resuming Congressional oversight and investigations into the manipulation of our nation’s intelligence agencies, the misuse of governmental agencies and the plundering of the nation’s treasury by delving into the misguided and horrible political & public policy decisions of the George W. Bush administration is to be cherished.
In particular, the new Congress’s effort to hold the Bush administration accountable for their foreign policy and war policy by ending the fiasco in Iraq is paramount.
Pelosi’s commitment to serving the common people of our country and not the economic/social elite is well known. That commitment to economic & social justice, equality & respect for the diversity of our fellow citizens is truly satisfying to those of us who worked hard to defeat the corrupt, sell-out, corporate Republican Congress.
Speaker Pelosi (one our nation’s most liberal representatives) will along with the new Democratic Congressional leaders begin to restore hope to our citizens that the reckless and destructive policies of the neo-cons and the corrupt Republicans under the Bush/Cheney regime is coming to an end. The quicker, the better.
