Commentary: Why Do People Fail To Heed The Real Lesson of Watergate and All Scandals – Tell The Whole Truth Immediately

katehi_linda1_bI wanted to wait until UC Davis sent me Chancellor Katehi’s response before I opined in this matter.  Perhaps she would have the one explanation that made sense of this entire thing. But her response is more of the same: denial or responsibility even as the evidence begins to mount that castes doubt on her claims.

Here is her full statement, you can decide yourself based on the evidence if it is believable:

Letter to TANC

July 1, 2009

Howard Posner, Chair and
SMUD Board Members
6201 S St.
Sacramento, CA 95817

Re: Status TANC Powerline Project

Dear Board Members,

The 30 June TANC/Navigant presentation before the Yolo County Board of Supervisors, and the Board’s reaction, indicates a significant likelihood that the transmission line project needs to be rethought or withdrawn entirely. The meeting did not show the TANC/SMUD organization in a good light, frankly – having none of the SMUD Board present was probably unfortunate, as Jim Shetler was unable to attend at the last minute. It is also unfortunate that no representatives of the Gualco Company were present to answer questions, forcing TANC’s single employee Jim Beck and Navigant Consultant Patrick Mealoy to deal with important relationship questions (explored further below) in this important public agency meeting. The following is a summary of current issues facing the project, which I believe indicates a building consensus against this project.

Source: Deal Close To Bring Grocery Store to Westlake

westlakeThe Vanguard has learned from sources close to the situation that a deal is close that would bring a Grocery Store to West Lake after the shopping center has been absent a grocer for over three years since Food Fair closed in May of 2006.

The Vanguard had previously reported the deal between the Delanos Grocery Store Chain and the owners of Westlake to be dead after the owners pulled their financial offer to put up the capital necessary to re-fixturize the interior of the store that the owners themselves gutted following the closure of Food Fair.

New Chicago Tribune Report Appears to Directly Link Katehi to Scandal

katehi_linda1_b.jpg

This morning’s Chicago Tribune has now for the first time directly linked incoming UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi to the growing University of Illinois influence peddling scandal.

The revelations link a politically connected Greek Orthodox priest trying to get help for the daughter of a family friend so that she could attending the University of Illinois.  In the course of doing so he reached out to a campaign adviser to State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias.  A few months later, that priest aided Giannoulias with a large fundraiser that needed him at least $120,000, according to the Tribune article.

Mr. Civility At It Again

saylor_webOn Tuesday night there was a contentious issue involving the placement of a new development in East Eighth street by the cemetary.  In this case, many neighbors came out wearing red in solidarity to argue that their agreement with the developers had been violated by city staff.

At times, the rhetoric became contentious.  Many representatives from the community of course came forward to speak and as is often the case, they cheered when they agreed with the speaker.

Vanguard-Davis Neighborhood Coalition Budget Townhall Meeting

citycatBack on May 20, 2009, the Vanguard and Davis Neighborhood Coalition hosted a Budget Townhall Meeting at the Veteran’s Memorial section.  It featured a panel of three members–Paul Navazio finance director from the City of Davis, Johannes Troost, Chair of the Budget and Finance Commission, and Mark Siegler, Economics Professor at Sacramento State and past chair of the Budget and Finance Commission.

The video is in two parts.  The first part is the panel discussion and the second is audience participation.

Council Passes Budget by 3-2 Vote

lamar_heystekCouncilmember Heystek Calls It Business As Usual –

The council after months of agonizing over numbers finally passed a budget, along party lines, by a 3-2 margin with Councilmembers Lamar Heystek and Sue Greenwald strongly and vehemently dissenting.

Councilmember Heystek told the Vanguard that he was reiterating that given the budget adopted by the Council, it doesn’t appear he will support an extension of the sales tax and therefore is likely to actively campaign against it.

Commentary: Superintendent Hammond Embodies Leadership

james_hammondOn Monday night, Superintendent James Hammond did two things.  First, he put to rest persistent rumors suggesting that he was planning to leave the Davis School district by taking a contract extension by two years.  This is an important event in and of itself as it shows Dr. Hammond’s continued dedication to the Davis School District in the face of tough financial times that will only get tougher as the State Legislature and Governor last night failed to reach agreement on the budget, meaning the state now faces a cashflow problem that will result in IOUs being issued as soon as tomorrow.

The second part of that commitment is that his contract which now runs through June 30 of 2012 takes a pay cut in–and not a mere superficial paycut, but a real one.

Anthony Woods Reacts to Lt. Dan Choi’s Military Administrative Board Ruling

choi_3.jpg

On Friday, the Vanguard interviewed Lt. Dan Choi and Anthony Woods about the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy.”  Lt. Choi informed us at the time that he would have a hearing on Tuesday.

“It’s basically called a discharge board or a retention board.  Whatever, you call it, I’m going to get fired.  I think people have to realize that.  They are firing people from their units in a time of war when you need people to serve in their country and these people are able, capable, willing and trained.  You’re firing them for the sole basis of who they are.  And the sole basis of their honesty.”
