Court Watch In Search of Council Members

Vanguard Court Watch of Yolo County is seeking applications from members of the community to become committee members for a newly-formed Vanguard Court Watch Council.

Every week, the Vanguard Court Watch, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is a focused, all volunteer effort to monitor and track cases that go through the Yolo County Judicial System,  puts 8 to 10 interns from UC Davis and other local colleges into the courtroom to monitor court cases.  The Vanguard Court Watch publishes these accounts on a near-daily basis.

“Our program does an outstanding job of monitoring court cases in Yolo County,” said David Greenwald, Executive Director of the program that began in January 2010.  “However, all too often cases of interest do not arrive on our radar screen until too late, if at all.”

“It was eye-opening to sit and watch the Breaking the Silence of Racism event on December 1, 2012 in the city of Davis and realize that people were coming from all over the region to share their stories,” Greenwald said.

We are creating Vanguard Court Watch Council made up of two members each from Davis, Woodland and West Sacramento. The council would hold a public meeting once a month to hear concerns involving pending court matters, prosecutions, police matters and other cases that may involve disparate treatment, discrimination or prejudice in Yolo County.

Council members would provide outreach to various communities by helping to locate cases of interest and bringing the matters forward in a public setting.

“The Council is a way to connect back into the community, to bring cases forward and help put the public light of scrutiny on practices that all too often occur behind closed doors,” Greenwald added.

The meetings will be structured and open to the public and anyone in attendance will be invited to share their stories or their concerns.

Yolo County residents who are interested in participating on the council are encouraged to send a brief letter explaining their interest, background and qualifications to here.
