Innovation Park Community Forum Speakers (Video)
The first Innovation Park Community Forum was held on Tuesday. This meeting washeld to discuss the findings and conclusions of the City’s Innovation Park Task Force and learn more about the options and issues the City of Davis will be considering in taking action to meet the needs of growing technology businesses.
On Tuesday night, six sector leaders were invited to speak to the Innovation Park Community forum. The following is video for each of the six speakers with a bio provided by the city.

Meg Arnold, CEO

Meg became CEO of SARTA in November 2009, after being closely involved as a SARTA Board member since late 2005. Prior to joining SARTA, Meg was with UC Davis for six years, with both UC Davis InnovationAccess and UC Davis CONNECT, where she developed programs to support campus-originated start-up companies, and participated in technology transfer licensing to new start-ups. After leaving UC Davis in 2008, Meg consulted to Drexel University as Director, Community Partnerships, and to Valley Vision, as Senior Project Manager for the Green Capital Alliance. In the region, Meg has served on the Board of the Sacramento Entrepreneurship Academy (SEA), the Steering Committee of the Green Capital Alliance, and the High Tech Direct advisory committee. Before coming to the Sacramento region in 2001, Meg worked primarily in strategic planning and business development for AT&T Canada, in Toronto, and British Telecom (BT), in London, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and business unit development and expansion. Meg has an MBA in Finance from the University of San Francisco, and a BA in English from Cornell University.

Mary is the Executive Director of the non-profit educational organization, the Center for Land-Based Learning, based in Winters, CA, which includes the California Farm Academy, the only beginning farmer training and incubator program of its kind in Northern California. She started with the organization in 1998, and has led it’s growth since that time. Raised on a small farm in Yolo County by “Back-to-the-Land” parents in the 1970’s, Mary is very active in local and regional groups, including serving as Chair of the Yolo County Planning Commission, and Co-Chair of the Sacramento Metro Chamber’s “Cap-to-Cap” Ag and Food Team; additionally, she has served on the Board of the Yolo Land Trust for 8 years, including three years as President, and is a founding member of the Yolo Food and Ag Alliance. Mary holds a Master’s Degree in Human and Community Development from the Ohio State University (1996), and a B.S. Degree from the University of California at Davis in Agriculture Science and Management, Plant Science Option (1992). She is an alumnus of the California Agricultural Leadership Program (Class XXXII) and the American Leadership Forum, Mountain Valley Chapter (Class XV).

Robert Medearis, Business Entrepreneur, Management Consultant and Professional Director
Bob’s exemplary talents and highly regarded reputation as a dynamic businessman have been demonstrated for over thirty years while serving in the capacity of director for nineteen companies and organizations including: Silicon Valley Bank (Founder), Bank Plus, Commerce Security Bank, Western Real Estate Trust, Risk Management Software (Founder), InnerAsia/Geographic Travel, William Sherman Company, Chalice Investments, Inc., Techarmonic, Inc, and the Gorbachev Foundation. Most recently Bob has been working with Elite Energy, LLC expanding the market for its cogeneration systems, including its proprietary thermophilic digester technology. Among his many noteworthy accomplishments, Mr. Medearis founded the $4 billion Silicon Valley Bank where he served as Chairman during its formative years from 1983 to 1989, and is now Director Emeritus. He is a retired Consulting Professor for Stanford University’s School of Engineering and at the University of California Davis, School of Management. Mr. Medearis is a widely acknowledged expert in the areas of Real Estate, Real Estate Financing, Banking and Entrepreneurship. His interests have been focused and have produced significant impact upon the Republic of Georgia where he developed the strategic plan for the Banking Industry for the Republic. Mr. Medearis holds an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Harvard School of Business.

John has been involved in commercial real estate for over twenty years and has participated in the development of over three million square feet of buildings. Prior to co-founding Capital Partners Development Company in 2002, he was the partner for the San Francisco Bay Area region of Panattoni Development Company and developed over one million square feet of commercial property with a value in excess over a four year period of $100 million. Drawing on this experience, his nine years as a commercial real estate broker and nine years experience in hi-tech manufacturing, John applies skillful needs assessment and creative problem-solving in his approach to developing build-to-suit projects and those developed on a speculative basis. John has developed commercial projects of all types for both public- and private-sector clients, but specializes in the development of office and industrial/flex buildings. His responsibilities have included all aspects of the development process including: site location/evaluation; master planning; market assessment and economic analysis; entitlements, design; construction financing; contract negotiations; and leasing and sales. John is a member of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) and is a LEED® Accredited Professional of the U.S. Green Building Council. He is an alumnus of UC Santa Barbara. He is a frequent speaker and panelist on the topics of commercial development and green building.

Dushyant Pathak, Associate Vice Chancellor for Technology Management and Corporate Relations

Dushyant is Associate Vice Chancellor for Technology Management and Corporate Relations at UC Davis with responsibility for InnovationAccess, which manages patents, licenses and other matters relating to intellectual property and the Office of Corporate Relations, focused on fostering strategic partnerships with industry. Dushyant has 15 years of management experience including with Fortune-500, publicly traded, entrepreneurial and start-up companies in roles through which he has led business development and intellectual property teams, commercial planning and clinical project operations activities and been in senior leadership responsible for a successful NASDAQ IPO. Dushyant has led entrepreneurial teams at the start-up and early development stage, including raising capital from investors in the role of CEO. Dushyant has also worked in venture capital with Connecticut Innovations and as the first EIR at QB3/Mission Bay Capital. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco’s School of Management. Dushyant received his M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business, his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Cell Biology from Northwestern University and his B.A in Natural Science & Mathematics from Bennington College. He conducted post-doctoral research as a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Fund Fellow and was a member of the Research Faculty at Yale University in the molecular biophysics and biochemistry department.

Mike has been an integral part of Five Star Bank since 2005 and believes that being a banker is more than providing capital and depository services, but also providing connections to the community. He is the driving force behind Five Star Bank’s emphasis in Emerging Business Banking which focuses on technology, life sciences and clean technology companies. He also works on project finance, business acquisitions, commercial real estate purchase and construction, as well as, being an active SBA lender. Mike earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from California State University, Sacramento and is a graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington. Mike is involved in several groups in the capital region that support the emerging markets including service on the executive board of Sacramento Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA), as well as, on the Sacramento State Student Alumni Association and the executive board of the Center for Land Based Learning.

Greenwald is the founder, editor, and executive director of the Davis Vanguard. He founded the Vanguard in 2006. David Greenwald moved to Davis in 1996 to attend Graduate School at UC Davis in Political Science. He lives in South Davis with his wife Cecilia Escamilla Greenwald and three children.

kimball’s views are interesting particularly when juxtaposed against don’s on the need to preserve farmland versus ag-tech development needs.
My husband it at a conference right now where they are presenting technology for “Direct Potable Reuse”. Water goes directly from the Waste Water Treatment plant back into the drinking supply.
