Yamada’s Woodland Announcement

At noon on the steps of the Yolo County Courthouse, Mariko Yamada flanked by many local elected officials and joined by many members of the public at-large announced her bid for the Democratic nomination for California’s 8th Assembly District.

Woodland City Councilmember Art Pimentel introduced Yamada to the crowd of supports. “I admire Mariko’s commitment to the people she represents. Her dedication to making Yolo County a better place for all is commendable.” He added, “Mariko’s dedication to making Yolo County a better place for all is truly commendable, and I know she will continue to fight for the working families of Solano and Yolo counties in the State Legislature.”

In a written statement Davis City Councilmember Lamar Heystek said, “There is only one candidate with the social service background who can advocate effectively for affordable housing, quality jobs and a living wage for the families of this district. Her name is Mariko Yamada.”

  1. I wanted to be there, but my office hours are during lunch and I couldn’t leave work.

I send my support and good wishes to Mariko.

  5. I am no fashion expert, but I did watch Project Runway and thus have a suggestion for Mariko: kill the reading glasses on the tip of the nose. That look doesn’t work. It never worked. Even more, the nose-specs make Mariko look languid, when in fact she is — as her supporters claim — an energetic, hard-working person. My suggestion is to go for the Jack Nicholson look — dark prescription sunglasses indoors or out!

  9. Everywhere I go, I am sensing a serious lack of enthusiasm about Mariko’s candidacy. Everywhere except on this blog, that is. Two people at your Fairfield announce, and one’s your husband? Where’s the inroads to Solano County voters? Where’s support from the local Democratic clubs (or have they too already endorsed Cabaldon…)? Who cares if it’s cold, David, real supporters would have been there.

I think both candidates should be wary of not trying harder to have a presence when one Solano candidate, Steve Hardy, is still mulling a run against two Yolo candidates.

  13. Art Pimintel has told people why he is opposed to Chris being the representative in the 8th district – and his bigotry is ugly. I don’t know why Mariko would be willing to stand by him.

  17. I was at both Yamada announcements and I was at Cabaldon’s announcement.

Cabaldon had several elected official and the only members of the public were either press members, myself, and Yamada’s deputy campaign manager.

Yamada’s morning announcement had a few people in the crowd and the three that you saw on stage. The weather was one factor the time was another problem. I will point out that Cabaldon did not have a Solano County announcement. The Woodland announcement by Yamada had about 10 people on stage and probably another 40 or 50 people in the crowd.

  21. I see a lot of enthusiasm surrounding the Yamada for Assembly campaign. I saw it before she even announced for Assembly.

I drove to West Sacramento from Solano County to vote for my friends to be delegates for the state convention for the 8th A.D. and ended up voting for Mariko too, because I liked her message. She received the highest number of votes from anyone wanting to be a delegate. She even received more votes than my friends.

I think that it’s great that her husband was there today. It’s good to see a woman candidate with so much support from her spouse.

The press conference was at an early hour, so not a lot of people could attend at that hour. There were more than two people in attendance in Fairfield.

I spoke with friends from the Woodland / Davis area and they said that the press conference in Woodland today was also well attended with lots of enthusiastic supporters.

Mariko is a great candidate and we’re very fortunate to have a Democratic woman like Mariko running for the 8th A.D. seat.

    We’ll be voting for her.

  25. Mariko made a positive challenge to all opponents to run a clean campaign on the issues as opposed to personal attacks.

I hope this is not an example of what we’re going to see from the other candidate or candidates if there are more. Let’s have them focus on the issues.

Also, to take a cheap shot at Art Pimintel is just that: a CHEAP shot.

Please follow the lead that Mariko has requested and take the high road.

  33. “Art Pimintel has told people why he is opposed to Chris being the representative in the 8th district – and his bigotry is ugly.”

What did he say? Was this statement published, or is it just a rumor?

Also, how can anyone say that Yamada has much support on this blog? Almost all of the “people” who say they support her are hiding behind pen names or post as “anonymous.” In fact, every “anonymous” may be the same person.

Nonetheless, the primary for this seat is 15 months away. No candidate needs to have voters backing them, yet. It’s kind of sad that candidates think they have to announce for office so early, most of which is just so they can raise money.

  37. OMG!

    Stop the Presses!!

The owner of this site has just suggested that Mariko trumps Cabaldon on Gay/Lesbian issues simply because she was part of a photo-op?

That’s what’s wrong with many of us in Davis. We think that doing a photo-op then going home and having some wine and cheese in our stately homes is somehow equivalent to actually sacrificing for a social issue.

Cabaldon has the endorsement of every gay and lesbian member of the Legislature. He has the endorsement of every gay and lesbian club. He would be the first openly gay minority elected to state office.

It is offensive to suggest that taking a photo is the same as actually doing something for Civil Rights.

Freddie Oakley did the right thing to draw attention to the need for Marriage Equality. But it takes a bold and rather blinded Mariko supporter to suggest that her participation in that event gives her better credentials on gay/lesbian issues.

  41. Question: Does Mariko’s try for the Assembly spell the end of her time on the Board of Supervisors? That is, doesn’t her term expire in 2008? And won’t that election be held in June, also? And if she’s out, who are likely candidates to run for Supervisor?

Because it’s a full-time job, I imagine most of the people who have run for Davis City Council won’t try for that office.

  73. Hello All,

Thanks to both our supporters and thoughtful detractors for participating in active debate about the issues at this early (very early) stage of the campaign.

As many of you know, I will be working for Mariko on this bid for the Democratic nomination. All of us on the campaign team look forward to a spirited race.

I want to clear up inaccuracies propagated in the comments so far.

First, the insinuation about Art Pimentel’s “bigoted” reasons for supporting Mariko over Christopher is flat out wrong. Mariko has been very supportive of Art’s political career. Remember, Art was told by some he should “wait his turn” to run for council, he did not and he won. Art disagreed with Cabaldon and McGowan over funneling some $2.5 million Yolo transportation funds into a West Sacramento streetcar study, and I believe Art, as many of us on the SMUD campaign did, believed Christopher did not do what he could to deliver a “yes” vote in West Sacramento on H&I. These are all reasons he supports Mariko over Christopher.

Second, there’s no doubt we would have preferred throngs of folks in Fairfield this morning, but a lot of press events are put on for just that – the press. The focus was always two media outlets- The Fairfield Republic and the Vacaville Reporter. We scored on the Republic and struck out on the Reporter. We also wanted a symbolic kick-off in Solano. Both Yolo County candidates have a lot of work to do in Solano. We know it. Christopher’s team knows it. If Mr. Hardy decides to get in the race, he will obviously have a distinct advantage in his home County.

On the issue of Mariko’s support in the gay community, let me just say that Mariko Yamada has stood up for equal rights for homosexuals her entire career. In her office she proudly displays numerous recognitions bestowed upon her as a supportive ally.

Someone here mentioned, but let me reiterate – there’s along way to go in this campaign. “Everywhere I go I’m sensing a serious lack of enthusiasm…”?? You weren’t in Woodland then today, my friend. Furthermore, where would anyone go to find unbridled enthusiasm about an election that’s over a year away?

Finally, I had a great conversation today with Robbie, my counterpart in the Cabaldon campaign. He and Art Pimentel are actually friends from their CSUS days. Go figure – we’re not all petty and cantakerous. Robbie and I agreed to a beer post election – winner buys.

I’m looking forward to picking up the tab.

  77. “Art is a young kid who would have a promising future, but he is prone to making glib remarks that are not politically correct.”

Art has broken all records for making enemies in his short period of time in office. The people that supported him originally have mostly all left his camp. He has a habit of saying one thing and voting another way. He also has a habit of backstabbing his friends and supporters. No amount of money will see him reelected but the developers have won with Art so he will have money.

  81. Well, the buzz around Sacramento today was, “oh crap, we did not see that one coming”. Yamada is well liked among the left and far left of the party in Sacramento and around the region. Yamada has been a strong advocate her entire life of social services issue’s, one that I don’t see of the other candidate. Yamada has fought for years for Adult protective service issues, Child Welfare, Employment and Social Srvices, WIA, IHSS and this is posted by a CONSERVATIVE OF WOODLAND!!!! The 8th will never have a Republican in it, we have excepted that. Good Luck Mariko!!

  85. The previous poster may have “excepted” or, probably, “accepted” that there will never be a Republican elected in AD 8, but the idea that Mariko is sending shockwaves is totally nuts.

What is sending shockwaves is that she announced with a Bush-supporting Republican when she is trying to run to the left of a gay minority ::: The one pictured here hugging the author of the Marriage Equality bill, alongside Phil Angelides and the Chair of the State NAACP.

I would recommend everyone log on to opensecrets.org and you can see this for yourself.

In the 2005-06 cycle Mr. Yin gave to the following:

    Doris Matsui–$5100
    Mike Honda–$3000
    Roy Blunt–$2000
    DCCC–$1000
    George Miller–$1000
    Mike Thompson–$1250
    Ellen Tauscher–$1500
    Dan Lungren–$700
    New Vision America Fund–$5000

Gee what a surprise, most of his money went not to Republicans but Democrats. What else do we notice? Oh yes, with the exception of Blunt and the DCCC all of those went to area congress people.

New Vision America is a liberal/ democratic pac: New Vision America Profile

In 2004 election cycle: two-thirds of his money went to Democrats (17,000 total, 12,000 went to Dems) and no money went to Bush.

In 2002, he gave only 6,000 and only 1,200 went to Republicans.

  97. Sounds like the Cabaldon folks are busy trying to smear anyone who supports Yamada. We see this with the attempts to smear good people like C.C. Yin and Art Pimentel

This is the strategy used by campaigns whose candidates cannot focus on the issues and have to resort to smear tactics.

Thank you Mariko for rising above this. You have shown us that you are good sport and a candidate with integrity.

  113. I will take the advice from 無名 – wu ming who I think is probably one of the best contributors here. You can find me at Mishka’s, so that’ll be my username.

I just want to comment that Mariko should be concerned that all the discussion has strayed from her message.

    – She supports clean money, but her first non-spouse endorser is a big funder of campaigns.

    – She is trying to run as a more liberal candidiate than Cabaldon, but has a press conference with a Republican George Bush Supporter. (note that his quote is on the front of her homepage!!)

    – And now there is a Republican defending her.

People can blame the opposing camps, but I don’t think that Howard Dean would have gotten as far as he did if he were making similar mistakes. At some point the candidate should be aware of how things are going to be perceived.

And for the record, I like Chris only because I saw his show. I haven’t met any of the candidates, but I have seen Helen Thompson and Lois Wolk here at Mishkas.

And for the record, I like Chris only because I saw his show. I haven’t met any of the candidates, but I have seen Helen Thompson and Lois Wolk here at Mishkas.

  117. DOES IT SCARE YOU THAT REPUBLICANS ACTUALLY LIKE MARIKO? THAT WE WOULD RATHER HAVE HER IN OFFICE THAN CHRIS. BOTTOM LINE, MARIKO IS BETTER PREPARED FOR THE JOB! MARIKO WAS APPOINTED BY GRAY DAVIS, THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES IN ITSELF. MARIKO HAS WORKED REALLY HARD FOR SOCIAL SERVICE ISSUE’S FOR THE AGED, BLIND, DISABLED. THE ECONOMIC DISADVANTED, THE HOMELESS, I COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT HER HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES RECORD. HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES IS ON THE FORFRONT IN EVERY BUDGET YEAR, MARIKO WILL FIGHT TO MAKE SURE ALL SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO NEED IT.
NOW YOU KNOW BE BY NAME!

  121. Of course I support Mariko for the Assembly. I was there for her announcement in Woodland. I am a senior citizen, an African American woman, a renter of affordable housing, a community activist, etc. and Mariko is a valuable resource of information, advice and help with my concerns and people I care about. Also, I have met CCYin and his family at a number of events and they are a delightful and unpretentious people. CCYin seems to be issues oriented and doesn’t rely on labels and don’t forget all the democrats who supported Reisig which shows how important labels are.

  125. It was interesting(but not surprising) how the Enterprise added the lengthy lists of political endorsements for Calbadon to their article announcing YAMADA’s candidacy. This tactic was trotted out at the end of the Measure X campaign, we remember, and the Davis voters went, Hoo-humm…so the Yolo Democratic machine political hacks are paying off on their political IOU’s.. we will see the same response as the voters flock to Yamada. It will be fun
watching Yamada peeling off Calbadon’s endorsements from the non-Yolo Democratic machine elected officials as the campaign unfolds.

  129. Davisite, interesting point about Cabaldon’s endorsements being all over Mariko’s announcement in the Enterprise. It happened a couple times in the Daily Democrat too.

    Kind of odd.

  133. “MARIKO WAS APPOINTED BY GRAY DAVIS, THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES IN ITSELF.”

I don’t understand this. What volumes does it speak from the perspective of a self-identified ‘conservative Republican’?

FWIW, I don’t think anyone should credit or discredit Ms. Yamada for how she was originally appointed. (I’m sure that Gov. Davis just followed the advice of Judge Rosenberg, her predecessor and a strong supporter of Gov. Davis.) She was elected in her own right afterwards, so obviously the people of her district felt she was representing them well.

Also, it seems rather juvenile to upbraid a Democratic candidate because one of her supporters is a Republican. Ms. Yamada will be touting her philosophy and agenda, not those of her supporter. It’s probably the case that this man is supporting Ms. Yamada due to a personal connection, rather than a philosophical one. I’m pretty sure everyone who successfully runs for office has some supporters who pulled for them largely due to personal connections. This is nothing to get excited about.

Don’t be so narrowed minded. What, a conservative can’t have a liberal thought, oh I forgot, you guys are the queens of the double standard.
