At noon on the steps of the Yolo County Courthouse, Mariko Yamada flanked by many local elected officials and joined by many members of the public at-large announced her bid for the Democratic nomination for California’s 8th Assembly District.
Woodland City Councilmember Art Pimentel introduced Yamada to the crowd of supports. “I admire Mariko’s commitment to the people she represents. Her dedication to making Yolo County a better place for all is commendable.” He added, “Mariko’s dedication to making Yolo County a better place for all is truly commendable, and I know she will continue to fight for the working families of Solano and Yolo counties in the State Legislature.”
In a written statement Davis City Councilmember Lamar Heystek said, “There is only one candidate with the social service background who can advocate effectively for affordable housing, quality jobs and a living wage for the families of this district. Her name is Mariko Yamada.”

That’s what’s wrong with many of us in Davis. We think that doing a photo-op then going home and having some wine and cheese in our stately homes is somehow equivalent to actually sacrificing for a social issue.
Cabaldon has the endorsement of every gay and lesbian member of the Legislature. He has the endorsement of every gay and lesbian club. He would be the first openly gay minority elected to state office.

Freddie Oakley did the right thing to draw attention to the need for Marriage Equality. But it takes a bold and rather blinded Mariko supporter to suggest that her participation in that event gives her better credentials on gay/lesbian issues.

I just want to comment that Mariko should be concerned that all the discussion has strayed from her message.
– She supports clean money, but her first non-spouse endorser is a big funder of campaigns.
– She is trying to run as a more liberal candidiate than Cabaldon, but has a press conference with a Republican George Bush Supporter. (note that his quote is on the front of her homepage!!)
– And now there is a Republican defending her.
People can blame the opposing camps, but I don’t think that Howard Dean would have gotten as far as he did if he were making similar mistakes. At some point the candidate should be aware of how things are going to be perceived.
And for the record, I like Chris only because I saw his show. I haven’t met any of the candidates, but I have seen Helen Thompson and Lois Wolk here at Mishkas.

I am a senior citizen, an African American woman, a renter of affordable housing, a community activist, etc. and Mariko is a valuable resource of information, advice and help with my concerns and people I care about. Also, I have met CCYin and his family at a number of events and they are a delightful and unpretentious people. CCYin seems to be issues oriented and doesn’t rely on labels and don’t forget all the democrats who supported Reisig which shows how important labels are.

This tactic was trotted out at the end of the Measure X campaign, we remember, and the Davis voters went, Hoo-humm…so the Yolo Democratic machine political hacks are paying off on their political IOU’s.. we will see the same response as the voters flock to Yamada. It will be fun
