Mr. Reynoso sustained a number of broken bones, ribs and a collapsed lung and will be healing for some time.
Justice Reynoso is an internationally known civil rights leader, the first Latino to sit on the California Supreme Court, and a 2000 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. He has served as associate general counsel to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, as a member of the Select Commission on Immigration and Human Rights, and as vice chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He joined the faculty at UC Davis in 2001.
Mr. Reynoso, 79, was named to the California Supreme Courtin 1982, appointed by Governor Jerry Brown. In 1986, he was part of the conservative revolt, that removed him, along with Chief Justice Rose Bird and Associate Justice Joseph Grodin.
Last year, following the shooting death of Luis Gutierrez by Yolo County Sheriff’s, he agreed to head an Independent Civil Rights Commission to look into the shooting death. The panel has met publicly both in February and April and made local headlines for uncovering new information, witnesses, which caused the DA’s office to re-open their investigation.
