Bob Poppenga for Davis School Board Campaign Fundraiser and Celebration

Bob Poppenga and family welcome our friends and neighbors to a special evening to support and celebrate his campaign for Davis School Board (election day is November 4th). Sample wines from Yolo County’s Turkovich winery while enjoying the world-class art at the John Natsoulas Gallery. A talented Davis Joint Unified School District student string quartet will perform. Face painting and henna tattoos will be available for kids and adults.
We welcome this chance to meet new friends and thank our supporters. All ages are welcome. The Poppenga campaign thanks all of the donors who have made this event possible.

Precinct walking and many upcoming events for Madhavi Sunder’s school board campaign!
There’s nothing like knocking on doors to see democracy at work on streets and in local neighborhoods. And it was a special honor for the members of the Madhavi Sunder School Board campaign to walk the streets of Davis knocking on doors with former California Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso, a historic figure in California and the country! In 2000, President Bill Clinton recognized Justice Reynoso with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
Even a 100+ degree temperature afternoon did not stop the Justice from walking the streets on Madhavi’s behalf last weekend!
If you live in Davis, don’t be surprised to get a knock on your door from a former California Supreme Court Justice, humbly asking for your support for Madhavi. Justice Reynoso knows that no one will work harder for every child in the school district than Madhavi.
Continuing with that energy, Madhavi Sunder and her team of parent volunteers are out spreading their message of “Strong Schools/Strong Davis!” They will be at the Farmers Market this Saturday, September 6 to meet members of the public, introduce themselves and answer questions. They will also be at Movies In the Park on September 6 for Despicable Me2, which begins at dusk in Central Park. The Sunder campaign is a sponsor of Movies In the Park, a series of four movies being screened outdoors over the next month. Finally, Sunder campaign is energized for its “Back to School Kickoff” celebration hosted by the Zaragoza Family & Delaine Eastin, Former California Superintendent of Public Instruction on Tuesday, September 16 at 5p.m. at the The Zaragoza Family Residence in East Davis. Members of the public are invited to “meet and greet” Davis School Board candidate Madhavi Sunder at a coffee event hosted by Sally Albertson on Sunday, September 7 from 3-5 p.m. at 3111 Northfield Court, Davis. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to sallyalbertson@comcast.net.
Madhavi Sunder is a candidate for the Davis School Board in November 2014 and has been a professor of law at UC Davis since 1999. She is a daughter of immigrants and attended public schools before graduating magna cum laude from Harvard and from Stanford Law School. Author and Scholar Maceo Montoya Speaks at Woodland Community College on 9/11
The Ethnic Studies Cross Cultural Series has invited Woodland Author Maceo Montoya to speak about his latest book The Deportation of Wopper Barraza on September 11, from 10:30 am to 11:45 am, at the Woodland Community College, Community Room 800. It is free and open to the public. Parking is $2.
Montoya will be describing and explaining the process of writing this novel, which takes place in Woodland and its sister city in Mexico. Montoya will be available for questions and book signing after his presentation.
Montoya is a resident of Woodland, graduate of Yale and Columbia University, a well-known painter, muralist, creative writer, a UC Davis faculty member, and an affiliate of the Taller de Arte del Nuevo Amanecer (TANA) in Woodland. This will be Montoya’s second time speaking at Woodland Community College. The first time, he spoke about his completed mural at the College that depicted the educational and working lives of our local young adults. Now, in order to bring awareness specifically about Woodland’s youth and their socio-cultural capital, Montoya will address various youth challenges and forms of resiliency that he wrote about in his book. Montoya will provide voice and insights to a significant segment of our community population and community members. He is one of the only contemporary writers to make reference to Woodland and also Woodland Community College in a book. The creativity and humor about the human condition illustrated in The Deportation of Wopper Barraza is captivating to all.
