From Press Release – Governor Newsom Issues Statement on Death of Davis Police Officer
Governor Gavin Newsom today issued the following statement regarding the death of Davis Police Department Officer Natalie Corona:
“Jennifer and I are terribly saddened to learn of the death of Officer Corona. Officer Corona was protecting her community from harm when she was tragically shot by an armed subject. Despite the valiant efforts of paramedics who rushed her to the hospital, and UC Davis Medical Center personnel, she succumbed to her injuries. We join all Californians in mourning the loss of this courageous officer and extend our deepest condolences to Officer Corona’s family, friends, and coworkers.”
Officer Corona, 22, was shot and killed while investigating a traffic collision Thursday night in the City of Davis.
Officer Corona began her service with the Davis Police Department as a community service officer in 2016 and became a police officer for the Department in 2018.
She is survived by her father, Merced Corona, her mother, Lupe Corona, and her sister, Jackie Corona.
In honor of Officer Corona, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

“I’m
heartbroken over the death of Officer Natalie Corona. She was tragically killed
in the line of duty while serving and protecting our community. My deepest
condolences go to Officer Corona’s family, loved ones and fellow officers.”
Officer Corona was shot and killed while responding to a traffic accident in
Davis on Thursday night. Officer Corona, 22, started as a police officer for
the Davis Police Department in 2018 and previously served the city as a
community service officer, beginning her service in 2016.

“My heart broke last night upon hearing the news. Natalie Corona, was widely recognized to be a rising star among her fellow police officers in the Davis community. Her service was so much more than a job. She committed herself completely to protecting the Davis Community as an officer, and also committed her personal time to working for us all.
We will, without a doubt, miss her dedication and passion for public safety. Yet, I know that nothing we are feeling could possibly compare to the grief of her family at this time. I am grieving with the Davis community and with Natalie’s family. Our community is shaken, and we will struggle for a long time to process what happened.
I would like to also express my deep gratitude to the first responders from Davis, Dixon, Fairfield, and Vacaville who bravely took to the scene while an active shooter was still on the loose.
Today, as we deal with the pain and anger we are feeling about the terrible loss of such a young, promising public servant, we should all focus on supporting Natalie’s family, her colleagues, and our whole community, including Arbuckle, where Natalie grew up.
One thing is clear: We are hearing news of gun violence terrifying and ripping apart our communities far too often. Enough is enough. I know that my constituents are tired of hearing leaders offer thoughts and prayers, but taking no action.
In the coming days, I will focus on what more we can do to prevent such senseless tragedies, because what we’re doing now is most obviously not enough.”
