The federal government is seeking to revive deportation proceedings against Mohsen Mahdawi, a Columbia University student, after an immigration judge dismissed the case for lack of evidence, with Mahdawi’s attorneys arguing that the government is retaliating against him for his constitutionally protected speech in support of Palestinian human rights.
Amnesty International has criticized ICE for detaining a Columbia University student inside a campus residential building, calling for reforms to protect students from immigration enforcement on campus and urging Congress to cut funding to ICE and Border Patrol.
Student journalists at Columbia and Barnard have faced censorship, administrative pressure, and threats to academic freedom while covering campus protests, but have persevered to provide balanced coverage and hold those in power accountable.
ICE submitted a misleading affidavit to a federal judge in order to obtain a search warrant to target Columbia University students for deportation, and the affidavit was unsealed in court as part of a lawsuit filed by the students.
CAIR has welcomed the release of Mohsen Mahdawi from immigration custody following a federal court order, and is advocating for the release of two other individuals who remain in custody under similar circumstances.
