The Anti Police-Terror Project expressed outrage and heartbreak over the killing of 40-year-old Anthony Anderson, an unarmed East Bay musician, by Alameda County sheriff’s deputies, and is calling for the expansion of non-police community crisis response systems in Alameda County.
The LAPD’s Mental Evaluation Unit (MEU) was created to reduce potential violence during police contacts involving people experiencing mental illness, but an assessment of the program revealed that it requires an armed, police-first response and lacks clear parameters for engaging with people in mental crisis.
