Thoughts on Growth

Just like a few water drops on a cotton ball in a baggie can cause a lima bean to sprout,
a spark can ignite a fire that consumes
all living things in its pathway.
It requires a lot of water to put out that fire,
and yet somehow life grows from the burn.
Words spoken can create meaning, new growth,
life inside human vessels, such as the few drops of water.
Those same words can ignite a fire in someone’s soul
that either can burn away the brambles of negativity
or consume any source of positivity – leaving the
vessel shallow, hollow and burnt out.
Remember that wonder as a small child as we
watched that lima bean sprout and grow before our eyes.
Remember the fires we witness as all life forms
suffer the scorching burn.
What we give to others can water growth, fire up
positivity, or burn down that last bit of life within someone’s
vessel.
New life emerges after the scorching fire and after the
watering of our souls.
Who are you watering today?
Who are you firing up?
It takes a lot of positivity to extinguish negative thoughts
planted within.

My “Why” for “Thoughts of Growth”; I wrote this as I reminisced about my childhood and the beauty of a cherished experience. Seeing the desolation of fires on the news and relating to the loss and permanent change caused me to rethink how deeply I cherish my memories. Families that lost everything in an instant created a desire in me to live in the now and honor my prison community by honoring their losses. I cannot change the past for myself or my community. I can change my interaction and my ability to connect, be fully present, and choose to honor healing through compassionate positivity.
