CITY SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR 2012 THONG HY HUYNH AWARDS

The city of Davis Human Relations Commission is seeking nominations for this year’s Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards. The Commission will honor individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions in addressing or improving civil and human rights issues in the community. The Commission encourages groups and individuals to submit award nominations prior to the deadline of Friday, March 16, 2012 at 4:00 p.m.

The award was established to acknowledge the racially motivated stabbing death of high school student Thong Hy Huynh on the Davis Senior High School campus in 1983. The annual awards recognize achievements in the areas of human and civil rights.

Vanguard and City To Co-Sponsor MLK Day

The 18th annual Davis Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration will take place on Monday, January 16, 2012 at 11:30am (an earlier start time than in past years) in the Varsity Theatre, 616 Second Street. The event is free, and community members are encouraged to attend. The program will feature presentations and music to help commemorate the life and accomplishments of Dr. King for civil rights, peace and nonviolence.

The City and the Davis Vanguard are pleased to co-sponsor Ms. Lecia Brooks, the Director of Outreach at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama, as the Keynote Speaker. The Southern Poverty Law Center is a nonprofit civil rights organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society. Ms. Brooks leads the Center’s outreach efforts on key initiatives and social justice issues. As outreach director, she frequently gives presentations around the country to promote tolerance and diversity. She also serves as director of the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery. Ms. Brooks will be sharing her expertise about current racial issues across the country.

Make 2012 A Successful Vanguard Year

Dear Friends,

2011 was a banner year for the Vanguard.  As we mentioned previously, readership in the fifth full year of the Vanguard was up 60% over the previous year.

Fundraising in 2011 was at an all-time high as we topped $35,000 – not bad for a publication that has been run on a shoe-string budget since its inception.

Getting Joe Arpaio in Sync with the Constitution and Away from Racial Profiling

The rule of law and how Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio runs his office are often mutually exclusive.

Arpaio, whose jurisdiction includes the sprawling Phoenix metropolitan area, has been labeled by supporters as “America’s toughest sheriff.” Unfortunately, he achieved that moniker by routinely violating the human rights of jail inmates and ignoring the constitutional protections of those he swore to protect.

Using New Vanguard Bulletin Board

A few weeks ago, the Vanguard launched its new bulletin board feature.  The feature will allow for two critical things.  First, it allows for the movement of off-topic posts from the comment section of articles to its own page, where the discussion can continue.  Second, it will allow readers to post their own topics and comments for discussion.

The bulletin board has the potential to become another point of vital discussion in the Davis community, on a whole host of topics that otherwise would be considered off-topic.

Open Letter to the Public From Occupier

Open Letter to the Public

I keep hearing, “Why can’t Occupy UC Davis be like those great protests of our past? Like the peace protests? Everyone was behind those students at Kent State.”

A Gallup Poll conducted one week after the Kent State shootings found that 58 percent of the public blamed the students themselves, while only 11 percent blamed the National Guardsmen. Newsweek, May 18, 1970, p. 30. They got what was coming to them.

Volunteers Needed For Bike Parade

bike-parade.jpg“We’re looking for a few good volunteers,” said Bicycle Parade volunteer coordinator Dyke Mundy. “We will have over one thousand bicycle riders in our effort to break a Guinness World record.  But we also need about 100 volunteers for the day of the event, and for the days leading up to the event.”

On October 2, 2011, the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge will lead an effort to break the Guinness World’s record (set last October in Davis) for the longest single line of moving bicycles.  In 2010, the Guinness World Record was set at 916 bicycles moving in a single line.  The effort this year hopes to shatter that record with 1,200 or more bikes.
