Register for Worlds Greatest Bicycle Parade

bike-parade.jpg“Get ready to register!”  With these words, Bicycle Parade Committee Webmaster Stewart Savage announced that members of the public, starting Friday, July 1, can register on-line to participate in the historic 2011 “Parade of Bicycles” – an effort to break the Guinness World’s record (set by Davis just last year) for the longest single line of moving bicycles.

The website address is www.worldsgreatestbicycleparade.com and once on the site, folks just need to click on the “Registration” link and follow the simple directions to register.  “Hundreds of visitors have already checked out the site in the few weeks that it’s been open, and now the wait is almost over.  Folks will be able to officially register to be part of this fun and historic parade,” said Savage.  The Davis Odd Fellows Lodge announced a few weeks ago that they would lead an effort to break the Guinness World’s record for the longest single line of bicycles.  The attempt will be made on Sunday morning, October 2.  The current record is held by Davis at 916 bikes in a “parade” last October.   Visitors to the web site are encouraged to visit the “FAQ” page where they can find answers to frequently asked questions about the bicycle parade, as well as the parade rules and other useful information.

The War on Drugs = A War on Women and Families

war_drugsby the ACLU

June 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s declaration of a “war on drugs” – a war that has cost roughly a trillion dollars, has produced little to no effect on the supply of or demand for drugs in the United States, and has contributed to making America the world’s largest incarcerator. Throughout the month, check back daily for posts about the drug war, its victims and what needs to be done to restore fairness and create effective policy.

The “war on drugs” has had a devastating impact on women and families, who have been greatly affected by policies like mandatory minimum sentences, prosecution of low-level drug offenses, increased conviction and imprisonment of those with relationships to drug dealers, and criminalization of women with drug addiction and mental health problems and histories of sexual abuse.

The 40-Year War on Drugs: It’s Not Fair, and It’s Not Working

June 2011 has the unfortunate distinction of marking the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s declaration of a “war on drugs” – a war which has cost $1 trillion but produced little to no effect on the supply of demand for drugs.

The war on drugs has been a war on communities of color. The racial disparities are staggering: despite the fact that whites engage in drug offenses at a higher rate than African-Americans, African-Americans are incarcerated for drug offenses at a rate that is 10 times greater than that of whites.

How Much for Homicide? ACLU and Harvard Law Sue Cooley for Records on Murder Cases

AG_Debate-3SPECIAL TO THE VANGUARD

The office of District Attorney Steve Cooley has failed to disclose public documents on the costs of prosecuting capital cases, according to a lawsuit filed today by The American Civil Liberties Union of California (ACLU of California) on behalf of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice (CHHIRJ) at Harvard Law School. The lawsuit is for public records on expenses related to homicide cases, and discretionary spending generally, by the D.A. of California’s most populous – and murderous – county.

According to FBI statistics, there were about seven hundred murders and non-negligent homicides in Los Angeles County in 2009, accounting for approximately 35% of the homicides in California and nearly 5% of the homicides in the entire United States. The Los Angeles County D.A.’s office (LADA) handles the vast majority of prosecutions arising out of murders in Los Angeles County. But in response to a broad request for records showing how much the office spent on these cases, the D.A.’s office claimed that it had no such records.

Join the Vanguard’s $10 Club and Enter to Win Free Dinner (Contest Extended to May 5)

When the Davis Vanguard was founded, we were able to do it on a show string budget. But as time has gone on, expenses have increased. It now takes a good chunk of money to keep the Vanguard on the internet and to better inform the public about what is really going on in our community.

For the cost of a typical newspaper subscription – $10 a month – you can do your part. This week, we are launching a campaign to get 100 people to sign up for a $10 a month tax deductible recurring donation.

In The Name Of Their Profits

by Mary Zhu –

In the name of their profits, the natural gas industry exerts control over segments of our government and its regulatory agencies. This is the theme of a series, “Drilling Down  about the contest between the hydrofracking industry and public interests (Ian Urbina, NY Times of 2/27, 3/2, 3/4/11).

This article summarizes the very important findings of the report and ends with a call to action to make government responsive to the needs of citizens, not corporate profits.
