However, the Vanguard has received word from reliable sources, that a shake up in this race may be on its way and from a most unusual source. In 2002, then Yolo County Supervisor Lois Wolk defeated Mayor Cabaldon for the Assembly Seat. Assemblywoman Wolk, herself a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the 5th Senate district, is now termed out barring changes in the term limits law in February’s primary. While she has not officially endorsed Mayor Cabaldon, she has been seen escorting him around, introducing him to key officials and constituencies.
Now the Vanguard has received word that she may be involved in recruiting another candidate–former Davis School Board Member and UC Davis Law Professor Marty West. Professor West served on the Davis Joint Unified Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2005. Professor West is also a distinguished law professor at UC Davis whose work has focused on civil rights, in particular gender equity.
If Professor West enters the race, that would make three candidates from Yolo County and none from Solano County. That would seem to leave the possibility wide-open that someone from Solano County could swoop in and have an outstanding chance at picking up the nomination. Rumors are speculating currently that there is a movement underway to find just such a candidate in Solano County. If that happens, this really does become anyone’s race to win.
—Doug Paul Davis reporting
School Board member Marty West was a public supporter of Covell Village and did not distinguish herself well when she seconded the Developer’s campaign literature that strongly inferred that they were contributing $50 million to our school district. She was forced to publicly recant this distortion of the truth as not a nickel was coming from them but rather from the taxes of the new residents.

How do you figure? It seems to me that this would make it even more likely that it would come down to a two-way race between Cabaldon and a credible, politically -tested Solano candidate.

I know Mariko and Marty personally. When it comes to statewide issues, there is no difference of perspective between those two ladies. It seems to me therefore that Marty getting into the race (this is the first I’ve heard of it) would cripple Mariko, but not affect the gentleman from West Sacramento. It would divide Davis votes, liberal-left votes, and women’s votes.
Also, there is no Solano candidate who is well known across that county. If someone who comes from Fairfield enters the contest, he or she would not automatically get Vacaville, Dixon or Vallejo votes. That person is probably not a name in those other communities. Because the mayor of West Sacramento has raised so much money already and spread his name in Solano County, it would be hard for a late-entering unknown Solano candidate to compete with him.
I therefore think a Marty West candidacy would be the final nail in my friend Mariko’s coffin, ensuring the election of the mayor of West Sacramento.

Mariko…. Come back to us! Support Davis’ right to determine its own future on our borders. Do not pressure us into abandoning the perogatives(and payments to the County)that we just renegotiated a few years ago.

To say there is no difference between Mariko and Marty is not accurate.

The final nail in the coffin for Supervisor Yamada?
It is one year out from the election, and I can’t find anyone of my friends who is excited about Supervisor Yamada. Today’s Dan Weintraub article in the Sacramento Bee (Liberal town? Davis is white, wealthy and conservative)was just one more advertisement that Yamada doesn’t understand us – she has gone from being someone we could trust, to someone who wants to be our parent and tell us what we should and should not be doing.
Two more things are on the horizon that will further disable Yamada: 1) she will be reporting over $40,000 in developer contributions on her upcoming report, providing yet another hook for folks who are upset by her sellout, and 2) Labor groups that have been encouraging her are starting to back off. They will be funding heavily the term limits extension that may eliminate this race altogether, and they are not confident that Yamada has any ability to win if term limits fails.
Now people are going to start looking for alternatives? You would have to be insane to get in a race where one of the candidates has an endorsement list like the one below (taken from his webpage). And if the long posting is a problem, imagine what it would look like to Marty West (who isn’t running) or an unidentified Solano candidate.

Cabaldon is continuing to look better and better. The endorsement list is quite something.
I believe that West Sac has benefited from his leadership and is a better community. Except for the development of West Sacramento during his tenure as Mayor what is so bad about him representing Davis and Yolo County?
I have yet to hear a decent argument as to why I shouldn’t support him other than certain specific people are supporting him, so he must be bad.

vincente,
No one said ‘there is no difference.’
What is the difference in perspective or opinion between Marty West and Mariko on statewide issues that you believe exists?
I’m sure there is some difference in priorities. And maybe on a small issue here or there they differ. But I know both of them. They basically have the same liberal philosophy about government.

Cass Sylvia is an interesting endorser of Cabaldon’s campaign.
Herewith a portion of her letter to the Davis Enterprise editor when the Covell Village election was heating up, in her capacity as Yolo County Guardian (advocate for the less fortuneate in the county):
[Covell] Village provides for downtrodden
“When a developer says they are going to do wonderful things for Davis, I ask them, ‘What are you going to do to improve the lives of these people?’
Usually, I don’t get a very good answer. Housing for the mentally ill is, to many, an uncomfortable subject. Affordable housing for seniors or anybody else is not considered profitable. And homeless folks? Well, you can forget it.”
A homeless shelter in Covell Village? Sylvia advocates for memorial services for the indigent when they won’t need any more services after that. But as far as influencing devlopement on behalf of the homeless, or seniors, or affordable housing in general beyond asking rhetorical quesitons of developers…I haven’t seen much advocacy on her part.

Whoever is subjecting us to this unending list of pandering politicos(a Cabaldon operative, ever vigilantt to sell the inevitability of Cabaldon’s victory?),doesn’t know the
Davis voter. Such condescending over-confidence begs to be deflated. Davis voters decide for themselves.Mariko… LISTEN and REPRESENT your constituents. This list contains a number of the same characters who lined up in support of Measure X; so much for their good judgement and influence.

The Yolo County Guardian does so much more than you infer. A memorial service is just a small, but visible task that the Guardian’s office does.
Just ask any family that is going through finding care for their aging parents. It is not an easy process. Now multiply it many times over.

Mariko’s candidacy is finished, DOA. She had nearly all of Davis as her supporters, until she refused earlier this year to support the Pass Through Agrement and the City’s right to control developement within its Planning Area. Such development is the Third Rail of Davis politics (as former Mayor Kopper says), and she touched it herself. Not one of her early supporters could show her that she was completely divorced from her consituency on that issue. She did it herself. And then, next, to have hired as senior campaign staff Brian “UCD’s paid lobbiest for the Biolab” Micek, shows us that she has no clue … really. (Hey, look up his web site … he’s very proud of his attempt to ram the Biolab down our throats ….) Meanwhile, her W. Sac competitor is painting himself green, the environmentalist … what a fraud. (Have any of you followed his W. Sac political career, on development and environmental issues?) But our very own Mariko has allowed him to do it, without any ability by her to challenge him: BECAUSE SHE IS WORSE THAN HE IS ON THE ENVIRONMENT. He, as least, says that cities should be able to vote on the development around their borders.
Now, Marty West as a candidate??? Please …. she would be a mere front for the likes of the gang from Covell Village.
Note that Wolk is behind this … and did any of you see or hear from Wolk as to the County’s attempt to ram those three large projects through County approval via the study areas? NO. Missing in action …. Meaning, she implicitly was supporting Helen Thompson’s attempt. Thank God for Chamberlain and Rexroad. How do I get to vote for them?
Anyway, I’ve written off the Assembly race, unless someone good from Solano steps up to the plate.
Provenza will win Mariko’s seat.
That leaves the City Council … the only issue is can the progressives pick off Saylor or Souza, or both?

There are a few interesting things which tie Yamada and West:
* In January of this year, at Cantina del Cabo, Lois Wolk and Mariko Yamada jointly gave Marty West an award at the Martin Luther King dinner for being Yolo County’s “Outstanding Legal Scholar.”
In 2005, two of the main campigners for naming the new school in Mace Ranch after Fred Korematsu were Marty West and Mariko Yamada.
Marty West’s parents were teachers at a Japanese internment camp. When the school opened, West contributed a framed photograph of Fred Korematsu standing next to the late Rosa Parks.
At the same ceremony, Yamada said, “As a child of the internment camps, this is a fitting tribute to a great American. Standing up quietly for what you believe is something that should be modeled for all children.”
* Yamada and West also teamed up to add Chinese language instruction in the Davis schools.
* Both are also avid fans of NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth.

This all sounds to me like the real shakeup is in the Sup Dist. 4 race, where West, with (or without) Yamada’s backing, would immediately become the favorite. West is a long time Davis progressive with a strong track record on local, state and national issues. Provenza is a relativie newcomer, primarily Sacramento based and mostly unknown to Davis voters except for the last couple years and virtually no community involvement before running for office. Smart money would be on West.

In the current political climate concerning Davis’ pass-through agreement the abortive attempt to arm-twist the Davis voter into accepting Covell Village, Marty West’s position during the Measure X campaign would doom her candidacy.

Cass Sylvia may be doing a sterling job as Guardian but she also has her political IOU’s to pay. For what it’s worth, her husband,Craig Reynolds, has been a long-time political consultant/operative for the Yolo political machine and now is in Assemblywoman Wolk’s employ.

I wanted to address the timeline made by Interest Observer much more closely…
As I mentioned briefly the sequence of events is off, but several of the events are either completely inaccurate or misleading.
It was Mariko Yamada’s support for the study areas in January and February that would lead Bill Ritter to leave her campaign on April 18. He left because he felt that she was not following his advice and that both would benefit from him leaving.
Mariko endorsed Provenza in early March before he announced his bid to succeed her.
Provenza did not hire Ritter until early July.
“Jim Provenza’s supporters threaten Yamada with recall and Provenza attacks supervisors at board meeting.”
This is misleading at best. Some people who also support Provenza did threaten Yamada with recall, but they would not be what you call his inner circle.
Provenza did not attack Supervisors at the board meeting–he did oppose the inclusion of joint study areas, but at no time did he attack anyone personally.
“Rumors of new Yamada backed candidate for Supervisor to challenge Provenza.”
This is patently false. Moreover, West would have no chance to defeat Provenza.

Why is it that if a man has a political view or interest, his wife is assumed to have the same exact view and interest?
Women quite often have their own ideas and concerns about things.

That was your thought not mine. My point was the “I scratch your back, you scratch mine” credo of the Yolo political machine from which all these Cabaldon endorsements spring.

We have pretty much confirmed this rumor. It is said to be done to destroy Yamada’s chances for the seat.

No it is not so much a rumor… I did tell a few people I was thinking of running as a Decline to State / Independent SOLANO candidate.
I’m still thinking about it.
