Fair Housing Groups Urge Congress to Reverse HUD Cuts that Threaten Local Enforcement

More than 100 fair housing organizations initiated a five-day national Fair Housing Week of Action on Monday, advocating for congressional restoration of federal funding for the Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP). According to the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), the program is the sole federal funding source for private, nonprofit fair housing enforcement, with community-based groups processing nearly three-quarters of all housing discrimination complaints nationwide. The initiative addresses concerns that proposed budget eliminations and altered grant distribution policies by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development threaten the operational viability of these frontline organizations.
