Orange County has agreed to pay $925,000 to settle a sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit brought by a deputy district attorney who alleged she was subjected to repeated inappropriate conduct by a supervisor inside the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Bethel Cope-Vega was awarded $3.5 million in damages after a San Diego jury found that the Orange County District Attorney’s Office had failed to prevent sexual harassment and workplace misconduct, exposing the county to over $8 million in financial consequences.
The U.S. Department of Justice has ended federal oversight of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office’s informant practices, citing reforms implemented under District Attorney Todd Spitzer, despite critics arguing that the reforms remain incomplete.
Orange County was ordered to pay $1.54 million in attorneys’ fees in addition to a $3 million verdict in favor of former Orange County senior assistant district attorney Tracy Miller, who was awarded damages after alleging harassment and retaliation by District Attorney Todd Spitzer and Judge Shawn Nelson.
Orange County taxpayers could ultimately bear tens of millions of dollars in costs defending a growing number of sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuits against District Attorney Todd Spitzer and his administration, due to a lack of accountability at the highest levels.
Former Senior Assistant District Attorney Tracy Miller has filed a lawsuit against Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer, alleging he mishandled murder cases and protected a former supervisor accused of sexual harassment, and has been removed from her position due to the allegations.
