A Yolo County Superior Court judge has set a retrial date of May 2026 for Carlos Reales Dominguez, the former UC Davis student charged in connection with the 2023 Davis stabbing attacks, following a mistrial last year.
Judge Samuel McAdam was allowed to continue presiding over the second trial of Carlos Dominguez after a judge ruled that the prosecution failed to establish that McAdam was biased.
After more than a year of litigation, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office has introduced a new theory in the prosecution of Carlos Reales Dominguez, suggesting that he may have been suffering from cannabis-induced psychosis rather than schizophrenia, despite the overwhelming weight of medical evidence pointing to schizophrenia.
Carlos Dominguez’s murder trial continued in Yolo County Superior Court, with the defense planning to call three expert witnesses to testify about Dominguez’s mental state and the prosecution intending to call five of Dominguez’s former roommates and a criminologist to testify about his marijuana use.
Dr. Stephen Weiner testified that Carlos Dominguez was severely psychotic at the time of the stabbings, believing he was being chased by a supernatural being, and Dr. Sirintip Rhee confirmed that Dominguez had auditory hallucinations and believed he was being guided by shadows.
Carlos Dominguez is on trial for two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and multiple weapon and injury enhancements, with a prior felony conviction, and forensic psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Weiner testified that Dominguez suffers from schizophrenia.
Dominguez’s former girlfriend testified about his deteriorating mental health and unusual behavior, while the prosecution called a witness who reviewed surveillance footage of Dominguez and a university witness who discussed his academic disqualification.
Carlos Dominguez is on trial for two counts of murder, with testimony from his roommates describing his behavioral changes, including hearing voices and a stiff posture, and a police officer who extracted a victim’s cell phone.
Carlos Dominguez’s father testified in court that his son experienced significant changes in behavior and hygiene starting in 2021, which he suspected were due to stress and possibly drug use, and that he did not do anything beyond talking to him to get help.
